Inauguration Police Tactics Produce Lawsuit
17-Mar-01
inauguration

Civil rights lawyers are filing a lawsuit charging District and federal police agencies with using unconstitutional tactics against Inauguration Day demonstrators, including detaining hundreds before they reached the parade route and using "agents provocateurs" to disrupt protesters. "Federal and local law enforcement are presumptively treating demonstrators as if they are criminals ... as if by their very existence they must be breaking laws, must be repressed, must be hemmed in, must be beaten," said Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a lawyer with the Partnership for Civil Justice, a District-based public interest law firm.

FUQ: Ben Bradlee as Mr. Jones

It's chilling listening to the monologue of the power elite, struggling to grasp who was in Washington and what they might have been protesting about. Are such displays of cluelessness about to return to the glory days of Ronald Reagan's "Ignorance with Confidence"?

Our Crowd: Welcoming Bush as he Sneaks in the Back Door of the White House
22-Jan-01
inauguration

David Lytel's take on Saturday's historic VoterMarch.org rally and march: "And then the most amazing bit of good fortune befell us. For whatever reason the Secret Service did not take Bush into the front door of the White House when he was finished reviewing the parade. They put him back in the car and drove him around to the Southwest gate. So there we were for our transcendent moment – two thousand very vocal Americans at the back door of the White House to welcome George W. Bush with our voices and our signs. It was all too ironic, to be there when Bush snuck in the back door of the White House for the first time as president. If he were blind and deaf he still would have been able to feel our presence there, and our disapproval."

Reality and Surreality in Washington -- A Report from the Front Lines
20-Jan-01
inauguration

The moneyed elite that governs this country - and for whom everyone from the Supreme Court on down really works - has come to Washington this weekend. But amidst the fireworks and the celebration of the inauguration of America’s first illegitimate president, progressive activists from all over the U.S. also gathered in Washington today. In meeting rooms in Senate and House office buildings, we plotted openly on how to ensure that the Republican partying doesn’t last more than two years. And, frankly, I’m not sure who is having more fun. I think we are.

Democrats.com co-founder David Lytel's Speech at VoterMarch.org Rally
20-Jan-01
inauguration

"I am here with a very simple message today. We are on our own now. Just as a new government is being formed down the street a new opposition is being formed in the streets. If we are to successfully counteract the extremist urges that are being built into the Bush presidency we need build an effective progressive coalition and create bold and confident new leadership. I am deeply sorry that Jesse Jackson’s powerful voice is not going to be heard today. And I worked for Al Gore at the White House, proudly display his picture in my home and I wish Al Gore all the best. But I am also no longer looking to Al Gore to lead us to the progressive victories we can achieve in the next two years. If progressives are to prevail we will have to get fearlessly out in front of all our politicians and reach back and pull them with us. We are the leaders that we have been waiting for."

Vigil now on this inauguration day, as with the common man throughout the world. Let us all act, and pray, that we are fit to the job of creating a world more free, more humane. Life, Liberty, Justice for all, not just some carved words on stony page, but flame within our spirit, and honest in its claims." Click for more of the "Official" Inaugural protest poem.
