Bush's Plan to Turn Yucca Mountain into a Nuclear Waste Repository
Yucca Mountain

From CitizenAlert.org: "The federal government and the Department of Energy (DOE) plans to build the nation's first high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. Yucca Mountain is located 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas... The plan involves moving over 77,000 metric tons of hazardous nuclear waste across the country, using rails and roads that pass through other major metropolitan areas and small towns across this country. Citizen Alert believes that all Americans should be concerned about this plan, not just Nevadans. Despite the July, 2003 Senate vote allowing DOE to proceed with a license application, this proposed dump is not a 'done deal.' Citizen Alert remains vigilant in fighting onward through the coming court cases. We have a tremendous amount of information on this subject." Hey Nevadans, Bush lied to you about Yucca Mtn in 2000. Don't vote for him in 2004!

Yucca Mountain Developers Knowingly Let Employees Work in Cancer-Causing Dust
Yucca Mountain

Common Dreams: "Gene Griego, a technician who worked at the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository site in the mid-1990s, has filed a class-action lawsuit against the site's developers. Griego charges that the developers knowingly exposed Yucca Mountain workers and visitors to highly carcinogenic hazards without providing them with proper protection. Though contractors knew the levels of toxic dust exceeded regulatory limits, they are accused of deliberately doctoring field readings of particulate levels in the Yucca tunnels to avoid the added costs, schedule impacts, and inconvenience of providing adequate respiratory protection and protective clothing. Worksite workers and visitors may have exposed family members and others to the poisonous dust by carrying it on their clothing from the worksite into their homes. "

Scientist Resigns from Yucca Mountain Panel to Spread Word that Bush's Plans are Dangerously Unsafe
Yucca Mountain

AP reports, "The nation's nuclear waste dump proposed for Nevada is poorly designed and could leak highly radioactive waste, a scientist who recently resigned from a federal panel of experts on Yucca Mountain told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Paul Craig, a physicist and engineering professor at UC Davis, said he quit the panel last month so he could speak more freely about the waste dump's dangers... Craig told AP about the Energy Department's design for the canisters: 'If we get high-temperature liquids, the metal would corrode and that would eventually lead to leakage of nuclear waste,' Craig said. 'Therefore, it is a bad design. And that is very, very bad news for the Department of Energy because they are committed to that design,' he said... 'The bad science is so clear they will be unable to ignore it forever,' Craig told the AP." FYI - Bush's record on Yucca Mountain is horrendous, Kerry's is perfect. Let's turn Nevada blue in November!

75% of Nevadans Oppose Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Dump
Yucca Mountain

Las Vegas Sun reports, "Three-fourths of Nevadans think the state should not be home to a high-level nuclear waste repository, according to a poll released Thursday. The state, which is opposed to the repository, commissioned the survey. It found about 75 percent of respondents statewide would vote against a plan to bury 77,000 tons of nuclear waste [that's PER YEAR] in tunnels below Yucca Mountain. The Bush administration and Congress have approved the site 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, but the final OK will come from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The state has long voiced its opposition to the project and has five lawsuits pending against the federal government. "

Bush's Yucca Mountain Nuclear Burial Scheme is Full of Leaks - Literally
Yucca Mountain

"The DOE's design for burying nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain would cause corrosion that would perforate the waste containers and allow leaks, an expert panel is preparing to advise the department," reports the Las Vegas Sun. This means that burying nuclear fuel rods - one of the most dangerous materials on Earth - at Yucca is NOT SAFE. But do Bush and his cronies in Congress and the DOE care? Even Republican John Ensign (NV) doubts it: "Every time a concern like this gets raised the Department of Energy ignores it. ... They just bury their head in the sand," Ensign said. "It seems no matter how credible arguments have been, they either ignore them or change the rules." That's the Great Bush Way!

Hazardous Nuclear Waste Coming to a Road or Rail-Line Near You
Yucca Mountain

"The Senate today pushed forward a dangerous measure that would put nuclear waste on trucks and trains destined for storage at Nevada's Yucca Mountain, despite the concerns of scientists and public health officials. The Sierra Club expressed disappointment in Senators who failed to protect Americans from nuclear waste. 'Yucca Mountain isn't a safe place to store radioactive waste,' said Sierra Club's Executive Director Carl Pope. 'When it recommended Yucca, the Bush Administration ignored more than 250 significant unresolved technical issues with the Yucca Mountain site, including how quickly the waste containers will leak radioactive waste into the aquifer beneath Yucca and the likelihood of seismic activity.' 'The Senate has made a grave mistake today, and we hope the courts will halt this unsafe scheme. The Yucca plan puts the wishes of the nuclear industry ahead of Americans' health and safety,' Pope continued."

Democrats Drumming Up Support for Anti-Yucca Vote in Senate
Yucca Mountain

Dems Tom Daschle and Nevada's Senator Harry Reid are fiercely lobbying their colleagues to stop Bush's irresponsible plan to haul nuclear waste across the country and store it at Yucca Mountain. Meanwhile, nuclear industry representatives who grease the palms of Senate Republicans are working overtime to bribe - oops! we mean, LOBBY - for pro-Yucca votes. A nuclear industry group with the misnomer "Alliance for Sound Nuclear Policy" is also trying to fool the public into supporting Yucca. There are a number of Democrats who haven't yet told Daschle how they intend to vote, so NOW is the time to contact the Senate and tell them to vote NO on Yucca!

Whitman's Corrupt EPA Warned the Ombudsman to Ignore Yucca Mountain
Yucca Mountain

Embattled EPA ombudsman Robert J. Martin, who was forced out by corrupt corporate lackey Christie Whitman back in April simply for doing his job, revealed that he was pressured by the EPA to stop looking into EPA's radiation standards for Yucca Mountain. Yucca is the seismologically unstable place that Bush, bowing to the nuclear industry, wants to designate as a repository for nuclear waste. Martin began investigating whether EPA's standards would adequately protect the environment and Nevadans at the request of Democratic Representative Shelley Berkley from Nevada. Perhaps the EPA put the brakes on his research for fear he'd find out the truth - that Whitman's EPA couldn't care less about protecting citizens from Yucca's radiation hazards, since Whitman's way more concerned about protecting her boss's campaign coffers.

Tell the NRC: No Nuclear Waste at Yucca Mountain!
Yucca Mountain

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the public comment period on the plan to store nuclear waste at seismologically unstable Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Don't think that if this nutty Bush plan goes through, your state will be immune from nuclear waste being trucked through it by rail as if it were no more damaging than a sack of potatoes. The NRC deadline for public comment in August 12th. Send your protest letter today!

Clueless Bush Cooks Recipe for Dirty Bombs? Earthquake Strikes 25 Miles from Yucca Mountain!
Yucca Mountain

CNN reports "An earthquake occurred Friday not far from the site of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. The quake was measured at 4.4 magnitude and rumbled through the region about 5:40 a.m. PDT, said Butch Kinerney, a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred about 30 miles east-southeast of Beatty, which is about 25 miles west of Yucca Mountain." We don't know about you, but we know one place where we will not be vacationing if the nuclear waste gets transported there! And by the way, the method of transportation is supposed to be by train, which makes this an even dumber idea... First of all how secure are trains? How hard would it be to sabotage the railways if a terrorist wanted to? Have you noticed all of the train crashes this year? We have a better idea... we know a fine place in Crawford, Texas that could hold all of the US nukular waste!

How Close Will Bush's Nu-ku-lar Waste Trains Come to Your House?
Yucca Mountain

If it's indeed true that, as the Bush administration claims, Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations are planning to create "dirty bombs", shouldn't Bush reconsider that stupid idea to ship nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain? Aside from the fact that Yucca is an unsuitable storage site, it should give us all pause to consider what great targets trains loaded with nuclear waste will make. The Environmental Working Group has put the idiocy of this plan into perspective with a website that lets you enter your address and create a map to find out just HOW close to your house Bush proposes to have these radioactive trains come. Check it out - and speak out!

Nevada Fights Back Against Liar Bush! Shuts Off Water to Yucca Mountain
Yucca Mountain

"Nevada made good Wednesday on a promise to shut off water to the site of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump, but the federal project won't run dry. The Energy Department is using a newly built 1 million-gallon tank and one small well for the site 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Department officials said the stored water, plus 400,000 gallons stored in other tanks at the Nevada Test Site, should last several months while scientists continue experiments and design work at the site...Stopping the water was Nevada's latest tactic in its efforts to prevent the federal government from storing nuclear waste at the site. The state has filed three lawsuits to block the storage." Bush lied to Nevada voters on the campaign trail that he would base the Yucca Mountain decision on "sound science, not politics." As a result, he won Nevada's four electoral votes. Otherwise, Gore would have won with or without Florida.

Help Nevada Fight Bu$h's Stupid Decision to Store Nuclear Waste at Yucca Mountain!
Yucca Mountain

There are plenty of reasons why Nevada's Yucca Mountain is an inadequate place to store 77,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel that will remain radioactive for 10,000 years, but Bu$h and the Dept. of Energy were too busy pandering to Bu$h's nuclear industry contributors to find out what they are. So Bu$h can now boast of the dubious distinction of being the first president to have a recommendation vetoed by a state governor. Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn's (R) veto throws the ball into Congress' court, and unless you're happy with nuclear waste being trucked through your state on insecure rail lines, we suggest you contact your House Rep and protest!
