Strom Thurmond's Mixed-Race Daughter Breaks her Silence
Essie Mae Washington-Williams, "a 78-year-old retired Los Angeles schoolteacher said she is breaking a lifetime of silence to announce that she is the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of former U.S. senator James Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.), once the nation's leading segregationist. In an interview, the woman said that Thurmond privately acknowledged her as his daughter and provided financial support since 1941... Over the years, Thurmond had called the allegation that he fathered a mixed-race child too unseemly to warrant comment. Noted political writer Robert Sherrill described an alleged daughter without providing a name in a 1968 book. The Post identified Williams by her maiden name in 1992, in a lengthy account of Williams's relationship with Thurmond." Essie Mae's mother was 16 when she was born; Strom was 22. That makes Strom a rapist in many states.

If your scour the Republican media, including the NY Times and the Washington Post, there is one word you'll never find associated with Strom Thurmond - and that is "Nigger." But here's what Strom said during the 1948 campaign. "I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigger race into our theatres into our swimming pools into our homes and into our churches." Listen for yourself - it's "nigger," not "nigra" and certainly not "negro". Let's set the record straight, before Karl Rove turns Strom's eventual funeral into an Orwellian rewrite of history.
