Liberalism

Dude, Where's That Liberal Elite?
02-Jul-04
Liberalism

Barbara Ehrenreich writes: "The notion of a sinister, pseudocompassionate liberal elite has been rebutted, most recently in Thomas Frank's brilliant new book, 'What's the Matter With Kansas?,' which says the aim is 'to cast the Democrats as the party of a wealthy, pampered, arrogant elite that lives as far as it can from real Americans, and to represent Republicanism as the faith of the hard-working common people of the heartland, an expression of their unpretentious, all-American ways, just like country music and Nascar'... the idea of a liberal elite nourishes the right's perpetual delusion that it is a tiny band of patriots bravely battling an evil power structure... Republican right-wingers may control the White House, both houses of Congress and a good chunk of the Supreme Court, but they still enjoy portraying themselves as Davids up against a cosmopolitan-swilling, corgi-owning Goliath."

Steve Gilliard -- I'm a Fighting Liberal
06-Dec-03
Liberalism

Liberal Blogger Steve Gilliard writes: "You know, I've studied history, I've read about America and you know something, if it weren't for liberals, we'd be living in a dark, evil country, far worse than anything Bush could conjure up. A world where children were told to piss on the side of the road because they weren't fit to pee in a white outhouse, where women had to get back alley abortions and where rape was a joke, unless the alleged criminal was black, whereupon he was hung from a tree and castrated. What has conservatism given America? A stable social order? A peaceful homelife? Respect for law and order? No. Hell, no. It hasn't given us anything we didn't have and it wants to take away our freedoms."

Liberals are Winning the Battle of the Bestsellers

Liberalism

Hesiod at Counterspin Central writes, "Go check out Amazon.com's top 100 selling books [http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/books/all/ref=pd_ts_a_hot/103-3334469-5074254]. Of the top 50, only ONE is one of those throw-away, right-wing propaganda tomes: Ann Coulter's latest foolishness. By contrast, Al Franken's and Joe Conason's new books, are ranked numbers 1 and 4 respectively. But that's not all.... Including the two books just mentioned, there are additional 5 liberal or Democratic books in the top 50. These include Jim Hightower and Molly Ivins' latest offerings. So what does that tell us? That liberal is IN. Or at least, you can make MONEY publishing LIBERAL political books, even without manufactured bulk sales. No wonder Fox is avoiding Joe Conason like the plague."

Dixie Chicks Embraced By Madison, Wisconsin
16-Apr-03
Liberalism

"The City Council in Madison, Wisconsin would like to offer the Dixie Chicks their city as a safe haven for the award-winning trio after coming under fire for lead singer Natalie Maines's recent anti-Bush comment while performing in London. City Council member Ken Golden has offered a resolution, co-sponsored by half of the council's members, that calls for a Dixie Chicks album to be played during meeting breaks, in addition to suggesting the mayor present the group with the keys to the city, French wine, and a 'suitable welcome' if they ever visit."

What Is A Liberal?
02-Dec-02
Liberalism

Henrietta Hay, columnist for the Grand Junction (CO) Daily Sentinel, is tired of hearing "liberal" used as an obscenity. She is proud to be a liberal, just as John F. Kennedy was proud to be a liberal. She quotes Kennedy's definition: "I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, in the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas....For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves....For the liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society." That's a philosophy by which any decent, intelligent person can live.

Killing the Messenger: How Systematic Lies Have Destroyed Liberal Politics
18-Nov-02
Liberalism

Gail M. Barnes writes: "It was amusing on election night to hear Tucker Carlson, that poster boy for the neo-cons, proposing that the Democrats must move to the Left to be competitive in a political race. Fine advice from a spokesman who seems dedicated to keeping the mass of Americans bamboozled by a stream of misrepresentations about the Left! Any such move would provide unlimited opportunities for the flacks and pundits to continue to destroy the two-party system by vilifying honest disagreement on the role of government. This strategy has successfully buried the fact that the Liberal left is not only the traditional party of millions of working men and women, it has until recently been an honorable and thoughtful political philosophy."
