Dennis Hastert

''If House Speaker Dennis Hastert is really concerned about drug profits being laundered...''
06-Sep-04
Dennis Hastert

"...he would not be sliming billionaire financier George Soros with that suspicion. Hastert would be looking at a principal conservative funder: South Korean theocrat Sun Myung Moon. While Hastert was unable to cite a shred of evidence that the liberal Soros is funneling illicit money, there is a substantial body of evidence that Moon has long commanded a criminal enterprise with close ties to Asian and South American drug lords. The evidence includes first-hand accounts of money laundering disclosed by Moon confidantes [and] Moon was convicted of tax fraud based on evidence developed in the late 1970s about his money-laundering activities. Since serving his tax-evasion sentence in the early 1980s, however, Moon appears to have bought himself protection by spreading hundreds of millions of dollars around conservative causes and through generous speaking fee payments to Republican leaders, including former President George H.W. Bush." So writes Robert Parry.

Soros Blasts Hastert over Drug Allegation
02-Sep-04
Dennis Hastert

"In a tartly worded demand faxed to Hastert, Soros wrote: 'Your recent comments implying that I am receiving funds from drug cartels are not only untrue, but also deeply offensive... You should be ashamed. I must respectfully insist that you either substantiate these claims - which you cannot do because they are false - or publicly apologize for attempting to defame my character and damage my reputation.'... John Feehery, a spokesman for Hastert, said, 'George Soros has an agenda. He supports the legalization of drugs, and the statement stands. [Hastert] has been fighting Soros on this for years because it is a character flaw. The Speaker thinks legalizing drugs is wrong.'" As Slate's Jack Shafer writes, "Where did Hastert get the notion that Soros might be getting money from drug cartels? A good guess would be the organization headed by political fantasist, convicted felon, and perpetual presidential candidate Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr."

Hastert Smears Soros - Sue the Bastard!
30-Aug-04
Dennis Hastert

"Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert - having already enraged some New Yorkers with his remarks about local office-holders' 'unseemly scramble' for federal money after 9/11 - yesterday opened a second front. On 'Fox News Sunday,' [he] insinuated that billionaire financier George Soros, who's funding an independent media campaign to dislodge Bush, is getting his big bucks from shady sources. 'You know, I don't know where Soros gets his money. I don't know where - if it comes overseas or from drug groups or where it comes from,' Hastert mused. An astonished Chris Wallace asked: 'Excuse me?' The Speaker went on: 'Well, that's what he's been for a number years - George Soros has been for legalizing drugs in this country. So, I mean, he's got a lot of ancillary interests out there.' Wallace: 'You think he may be getting money from the drug cartel?' Hastert: 'I'm saying I don't know where groups - could be people who support this type of thing. I'm saying we don't know.'" Sue him, George!

Dennis Hastert

In 1997, a congressional delegation led by GOP Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) – currently Speaker of the House of Representatives who was then chairman of the House subcommittee on national security – secretly encouraged Colombian military officials to ignore human rights conditions on U.S. aid. (See Documents 52, 54 and 55), according to newly released FOIA documents. We demand a House Ethics Investigation!
