Democratic Convention 2004

Good Overview of Kerry's Nomination on Thursday
30-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

From the UK Guardian: "Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry signalled his willingness early today to tough it out and battle George Bush on national security and Iraq as he gave his acceptance speech to the Democratic convention. Introduced by his daughters, Vietnam veterans and a 10-minute film telling his life story, he told delegates and US television audiences that he had the experience, values and ability to become their commander-in-chief at a testing time. 'I know what we have to do in Iraq,' he said. 'We need a president who has the credibility to bring our allies to our side and share the burden, reduce the cost to American taxpayers, reduce the risk to American soldiers. 'Here is the reality: That won't happen until we have a president who restores America's respect and leadership so we don't have to go it alone in the world.' "

Unlike the GOP's Sweatshop Items, Dem Souvenirs are MADE IN THE USA - by Union Workers
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

"The official convention souvenirs are made in America - and with union labor, of course. Look closely and you can even see which union toiled on the T-shirts, bumper stickers and dog tags touting John Kerry and John Edwards. No sweatshops here. Conventioneers snapped up Kerry-Edwards T-shirts made by Windjammer in Bangor, Pa., with labor by the union UNITE-HERE, formerly the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees and the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees. The shirt tags have special UNITE labels. Union President Bruce Raynor said Thursday that he approached Kerry soon after he emerged as the nominee, asking that the campaign use UNITE-made T-shirts and other union-made trinkets. "We've worked closely with the Democrats to make sure that happened, and we're proud of that," he said. "I think you'll see a big contrast when Republicans convene in New York."

John Edwards: Join Us in Building ONE America
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

"We have so much work to do. Because the truth is, we still live in two different Americas: one for people who have lived the American Dream and don't have to worry, and another for most Americans who work hard and still struggle to make ends meet. It doesn't have to be that way. We can build one America...What we believe -- what John Kerry and I believe -- is that you should never look down on anybody, that we should lift people up. We don't believe in tearing people apart. We believe in bringing people together. What we believe -- what I believe -- is that the family you're born into and the color of your skin in our America should never control your destiny. Join us in this cause. Let's make America stronger at home and respected in the world. Let's ensure that once again, in our one America -- our one America -- tomorrow will always be better than today."

Mayor Martin O'Malley: Why Have Our Real Homeland Security Warriors Been Forgotten by the White House?
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

"Where is the urgency, Mr. President, when three years our firefighters and police officers from NYC to LA...still lack the funds to keep our families safe and still don't have the protective gear they need [to prevent or respond to a terrorist attack]? Ask America's mayors. Ask America's firefighters and police officers on the frontlines, right here at home. When citizens dial 911, it's a local call. The phone doesn't ring at the White House. When one of America's fire or police heroes sacrifices their life in the line of duty, who rushes to the hospital to comfort the grieving spouse? When a folded flag is presented to the young son or daughter who will never see their mom or dad again, who is at the graveside? It's your fire chief. It's your police commissioner. It's your mayor. This is our duty. And we do it proudly. And we can do it well, but not without the support of our federal government."

Predicted Protests in Boston Never Appear as Far Left Calls Truce with Democrats in Fight against Bush
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Boston. com: "To prepare for the protesters expected to swarm Boston during the Democratic National Convention, security planners amassed a force of 5,000 law enforcement officers. The city built a razor-wired protest zone ...Suffolk County officials cleared enough jail cells and courtrooms to handle 2,500 arrests. Total number of protest-related arrests so far this week: One. Where are the protesters? 'Clearly, what this represents is that folks on the left have decided it would be counterproductive to protest the DNC,' said Jason Pramas, a labor organizer from Cambridge. Many progressives, radicals, and Greens are saving their protests for the GOP Convention in New York. 'We are confident the New York demonstrations will be quite massive,' said Leslie Cagan, national coordinator for United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of antiwar groups." By contrast, Boston police estimate the size of the largest Boston protest at 700.

Complete List of Convention Speakers and Transcripts of their Speeches
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

From Bill Clinton's rousing call to decision, to Barack Obama's soul-stirring call to American unity, to Jimmy Carter's call to reclaim America's soul...this is the spirit of America at its height! Here is a list of all speakers and transcripts of their speeches as they become available.

Barack Obama's Stirring Words
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Even the Republicans (who promptly induced their media minions to make obtaining transcripts more difficult than any of the other speeches) were staggered by the power of this speech! If you can, view a video transcript for the full power. "As I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents' dreams live on in my precious daughters.... Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy. Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' "

Jimmy Carter: 'At Stake is Nothing Less than Our Soul'
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

"Today, our dominant international challenge is to restore the greatness of America, based on telling the truth, a commitment to peace, and respect for civil liberties at home and basic human rights around the world. Truth is the foundation of our global leadership, but our credibility has been shattered and we are left increasingly isolated and vulnerable in a hostile world. Without truth, without trust, America cannot flourish. Trust is at the very heart of our democracy, the sacred covenant between a president and the people. When that trust is violated, the bonds that hold our republic together begin to weaken....Ultimately, the basic issue is whether America will provide global leadership that springs from the unity and the integrity of the American people, or whether extremist doctrines, the manipulation of the truth, will define America's role in the world. At stake is nothing less than our nation's soul."

Boston Media Bombing Threat - Just More BushRidge Disinformation
29-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Glynn Wilson writes, "A domestic intelligence expert questions the veracity of a report released last week by the FBI's Boston field office claiming that a radical domestic terrorist group planned to blow up media vehicles at the Democratic Party's national convention. Mark Potok, editor of Investigative Reports, published by the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., has extensive experience monitoring and reporting on neo-Nazi groups inside the United States. He said the report was questionable. 'We have had no indication whatsoever, not an inkling, that there is any kind of violent action planned by the radical right in Boston,' Potok said. 'We follow these groups quite closely.'" Sounds like BushRidge disinformation, intended to keep Americans in a state of perpetual fear.

Democrats Find their Voice - Despite Media's Desperate Effort to Silence and Suppress It
28-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

The Democrats have found their voices and are finally ROARING! Heinz Kerry summed it up in her powerful speech: "In America, the true patriots are those who dare speak truth to power. The truth we must speak now is that America has responsibilities that it is time for us to accept again....[John Kerry] knows that a true leader inspires hope and vanquishes fear. This administration does neither. Instead, it brings fear." Barack Obama, Illinois's African American candidate for senate, told it like it is to thunderous applause when he railed against "spinmeisters" who "like to slice and dice the country into Red states and Blue states...I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America - There's the United States of America." Ted Kennedy brought the house down when he said that "the cries of the false patriots who bully dissenters into silence and submission" echo the conditions that led to the first Revolutionary war.

Ex-Marine, Ex-Republican Takes Center Stage to Praise Kerry's Vision of National Security
27-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Boston.com. "Sitting stock straight in a pinstripe suit on a Boston park bench, [fromer Marine lt. col. Steve] Brozak...said he saw too many Republicans with the "arrogant attitude that if you ask questions, you're considered disloyal." And Brozak is anything but disloyal! He "volunteered to return to active duty the day after the Sept. 11 attacks. If his newborn daughter hadn't kept him awake the night before, he might have been passing through the World Trade Center, bound for work a few blocks away, when the jetliners rammed the towers. On Wednesday evening, in the city where the hijacked jets took off, Brozak says he will speak to party delegates about terrorism and defense. He plans to tell them that Sen. John Kerry "offers a real vision ... for making sure we win the war on terror and making sure we have solutions for the Iraqi conflict. Last year, upset by GOP attacks on such military veterans as former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, Brozak abandoned his party."

Pentagon Quietly Providing Unprecedented Level of Security for Democratic Convention
27-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

With the likes of Donald Rumsfeld and his henchmen dominating the press, it is easy to forget that the Pentagon is not just NeoCon Vulcans. And, with all the talk of WTC, the horrific Pentagon tragedy is oft given too little attention. But it is very clear there are are plenty of folks at the Pentagon wearing white hats - not to mention 'purple hearts" won in unsung battles with the current "regime." Now AP reports: "The Pentagon has quietly positioned air, land and sea forces in and around Boston in an unprecedented level of military support for a national political convention. "We have provided security for past conventions but nothing to the extent we have now," said Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for U.S. Northern Command. Kucharek said the military's main role is behind-the-scenes coordination and preparation to respond to a major emergency." We at Democrats.com want to say THANK YOU!!

Clinton Speech Expected to Be Watched by Whopping 48% of All Registered Voters!
26-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Bloomberg: "Former President Bill Clinton's address before the Democratic National Convention ... before tonight's opening session of the convention in Boston will be seen by 48% of the nation's voters, according to a survey by the Hamden, CT, university. The survey of 1,551 people has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. ``Clinton is still a popular political figure, and one of the best campaigners in the history of the White House,'' said Scott Reed, who managed Republican Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign. Reed said that that Kerry runs the risk of being overshadowed by Clinton." Of course Reed, being a Repug campaigner WOULD think that way. You'll note how Bush never has the guts to have a really dynamic speaker share the limelight with him! We think Clinton's appearance proves not just Dem unity, but Kerry's unselfish courage.

Democratic Convention Attracts a Constellation of Stars
26-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Seen out and about at various events at the Democratic Convention since it kicked off on Friday were: Ben Affleck, Amber "Joan of Arcadia" Tamblyn, Natalie Portman, Jerry Springer, Danny Glover, Little Richard, Arianna Huffington, Gloria Steinem, Bill and Hillary Clinton, James Carville, Al Franken, Elliot Spitzer, Al and Tipper Gore...Rightwingers Tom Brokaw and Tim Russert are there, too, but for reasons less than pure, we're sure (as in finding ways to undermine the coverage). This Bushie cocktail circle duo were spotted at the "Baseball Tavern" trying to make like "regular blue collar guys" (LOL!).

Monday's Schedule at Democratic Convention: Highlight: Nancy Pelosi's 'Boston Tea Party'
26-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

A highlight of today's events includes Nancy Pelosi's "Boston Tea Party." Let's hope it's more prophetic than historic! Here are just a few additional highlights - JUST from Monday: Hispanic Caucus, Women Leaders, All-Star Governors, Arab American Institute, Human Rights Campaign, Pro-Life Democrats, Holocaust Memorial Tour, Forum on Brown Vs Board of Education, Women Senators, Disability Caucus, Asian Pacific Islander Caucus...What was that Bush was saying about how the DNC isn't diverse enough....? LOL!!

Democratic Convention Will Be the Greenest Political Convention in US History
26-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

ENN: "The Democratic National Convention [is expected to be] the greenest political convention in American history. To reach this goal, the DNCC and Boston 2004 have conducted all-department meetings focused on environmental issues, have worked extensively with the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Conventions, and have collaborated with other organizations to design a multifaceted plan to ensure an environmentally friendly convention. Bruce Hamilton, national conservation director for the Sierra Club, said, 'It is great to see the Democratic National Convention planners showcasing environmental solutions by incorporating simple measures that can protect the Earth and provide a quality convention experience. Democrats have regularly promoted renewable energy, recycling, mass transportation, and reducing pollution that leads to global warming. It is encouraging to see a major national convention that reflects these environmental values.' "

Boston Crackles with Positive Energy as Dem Convention Kicks Off
26-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Boston Globe: "Delegates fanned out from their hotels and converged on nearly 30 official parties last night. Legions of law enforcement officers lined up at the State House and near the FleetCenter to handle unrest that never came. And on a day Bostonians found it nearly impossible to walk through the city without being handed political leaflets, groups from all over the political spectrum tried to grab attention with costumes, street theater...Despite an enormous security presence, including police in riot gear and helicopters, the mood through the city was largely upbeat under blue skies and a hot sun. Abortion foes rallied cheek-by-jowl with prochoicers at Faneuil Hall, and Mayor Thomas M. Menino and firefighters announced an 11th-hour agreement that averted a major embarrassment for the Democratic mayor hosting the city's first major national political convention."

Baltimore's Mayor Martin O'Malley to Address Dem Convention on Homeland Security Crisis in Cities
15-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

Democrats in Maryland knew for sure that Baltimore's charismatic mayor, Martin O'Malley, was a rising star when he started to be systematically harassed by Bush's good buddy Bob Ehrlich (Maryland's Repug governor), including such tricks as illegally appointing his pals to top city posts without O'Malleys knowledge. Now O'Malley has been named as a major speaker for the Democratic Convention, where he will talk about the plight of cities trying to insure Homeland Security with negligible help from the Bush admin. "Mayor O'Malley's overwhelming support for first responders and leadership in homeland security make him the perfect speaker to represent John Kerry's vision of a stronger, more secure America," said Lina Garcia, press secretary for the convention.

Ron Reagan Will Speak at DEMOCRATIC Convention
12-Jul-04
Democratic Convention 2004

"Ron Reagan will speak in prime time at the Democratic National Convention on the importance of stem cell research... Ron Reagan, a self-described liberal whose political views were often at odds with his conservative Republican father, has said publicly that he does not support President Bush's re-election. Reagan raised eyebrows during his father's burial service in June when he said in his eulogy that his father 'never made the fatal mistake of so many politicians, wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage... Reagan later told CNN that he did not set out to take a dig at Bush, though after so many other people made that connection, 'I began to think maybe I was. I just didn't know it.'... Former first lady Nancy Reagan has also called on Bush to reverse course on his stem cell policy."
