CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE ON ELECTION REFORM TO VISIT JACKSONVILLE

(Washington, DC) Congresswoman Corrine Brown announced today that the House Democratic Caucus Special Committee on Election Reform will hold a hearing in Jacksonville from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 18 at the Ritz Theater & LaVilla Museum.

The Special Committee on Election Reform was formed by House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt in February and its charge is to gather information from across the country regarding election problems and proposed solutions, as well as make recommendations about potential legislation.

Brown invited the committee to hold hearings in Jacksonville because of the voting irregularities that occurred throughout Duval county during the last presidential election.

The committee is expected to identify funding possibilities, provide information on new technology, and make recommendations for national voting standards.

Members of the special committee who will participate in the hearing include Chairwoman Maxine Waters, Congressman David Price, Congressman Alcee Hastings, and Congresswoman Corrine Brown.

Hearing panelists include Florida State Senator Mandy Dawson (District 30), Mr. Michael Langton of Langton & Associates, Mr. Wayne Hogan, Esq., Mrs. Terrie Brady President, Duval Teachers United, and Mrs. Adora Obi Nweze, President, NAACP Florida State Conference Branches.

Brown introduced a resolution this week that calls on Congress to support a Voter's Bill of Rights. The resolution is similar to the Bill of Rights included in the Florida Legislature's election reform legislation that was signed into law earlier this year.
