Come One! Come All! Meet the Fabulous, Fickle, Free-Loading, Fallacious, Fanatical, Farcical, Felonious, Floundering FLIP FLOP Man!
Cheryl Seal writes: "The Rove-ling Brothers Circus has come to town with its amazing Center Ring attraction: FLIP FLOP MAN! He whines (when the press doesn't cooperate)! He dines (with corporate execs and their checkbooks)! He car-awlllllllls on his belly like a reptile! You've never seen anything like him under the Big Top (of the White House) ever before! He's played to a crowned head of Europe (Tony Blair's sidekick Queen Elizabeth). He's stunned audiences from Kalamazoo to Kuwait with his sleight of hand! It's the one, the only (thank God!), the OUTGOING (in January 2005), George W. Bush, the World's Foremost FLIP FLOP MAN!!!!!!!!! Here is just a sampling of his confounding and truth-defying stunts!
Newsmax reports, "The money math is simple. The Kerry forces - through his campaign, the unions and the 527s - will outspend Bush by some $300 million or more by election day... One wealthy Republican - one of the few who can write Soros-style checks of $10 million or more - tells us that he has, all of a sudden, gotten calls from desperate Republicans seeking help. All calls have gone unreturned. Like most Republicans, he is strongly rooting for Bush. But no money will be sent. This donor doesn't believe it will make much of a difference at this point. And then there's politics. President Bush never invited the donor - a frequent guest in the Oval Office of previous Republican presidents - to the White House even once during the past four years. It's a story we have heard time and again. Conservatives who write to the president get no response, and no one from the Bush White House calls to thank their friends and supporters on behalf of the President."
Common Dreams: "Wisconsin Senator Russell Feingold (D) and 34 of his colleagues sent letters to Bush asking him to withdraw a Clean Water Act policy directive issued in January 2003 that stripped environmental protections from streams, wetlands and lakes. The policy-initiated through a joint memorandum issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -directs federal officials to ignore Clean Water Act environmental safeguards over many kinds of wetlands, streams, and other waters unless they first get permission from their national headquarters in Washington, DC [what a joke!!]. The policy leaves more than 20 millions of acres of wetlands and as much as 60% of the nations' streams without any federal protections."
Bush is going after MoveOn, a bonafide grass roots movement with an irrational vengeance. MoveOn was founded by seven activists - none of them representing a political party, none of them office holders, none of them with a corporate agenda. Yet right now, a pro-Bush group that IS politically affiliated, that IS corporate powered is running anti-Kerry ads funded by corporate soft money. Of course their ads are pretty pathetic - they use the worn out ploy "Massachusetts liberal" and think everyone will be horrified that Kerry wears $75 ties. (hey! we need comic relief). But guess what? Citizens United tried to interfere with due process (they called it "courtroom advocacy") to BLOCK McCain-Feingold and the GAO's efforts to make Cheney come clean on the energy task force. Citizens United also played a key part in the Get Clinton efforts.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Justice and a letter to the White House asking for the release of any records regarding information taken from the computers of Senate Judiciary Committee Democratic staff in regard to judicial nominations: "Our request includes, but is not limited to, any and all communications regarding the records of staff members for Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Senator Joseph R. Biden, Senator Herbert H. Kohl, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Russ Feingold, Senator Charles E. Schumer, Senator Richard J. Durbin, and Senator John R. Edwards. We request that you search for responsive records regardless of format, medium, or physical characteristics." WashPost reports: "But although the law gives an advantage to the GOP because of its ability to raise still-legal smaller contributions known as 'hard money,' [such as Bush's fundraising pyramids that bundle contributions -- the 'Pioneers' and 'Rangers'] a number of strategists believe both parties will be weakened in the long run. And the role of 'independent' groups acting in behalf of Republican or Democratic candidates, some of which are not required to disclose donors or expenditures, will grow. The court decision sanctions the activities of the growing network of 'independent' groups that are taking over many of the functions of the political parties. These organizations, many known as '527s' for the section of the tax code that regulates them, 'remain free to raise soft money to fund voter registration, [get out the vote] activities, mailings, and broadcast advertising,' the high court majority wrote."
The Treasonous Three - Antonin Scalia, William Rehnquist, and Clarence Thomas - tried their best to overturn the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform law, but they only persuaded Anthony Kennedy, not Sandra Day O'Connor. "The law, which sought to control the influence of money in politics, was aimed primarily at two widespread practices. It prohibited national parties and federal candidates from raising and spending so-called 'soft money,' donations that are not subject to federal limits because they technically go to state political parties. And it clamped new regulations on 'issue ads,' commercials financed by interest groups, purportedly to advance their causes, which were actually thinly disguised partisan promotions of particular candidates for office."
"The Senate voted itself a pay raise for the fifth straight year, boosting the annual salary to about $158,000 in 2004. The House also agreed last month to accept an increase in the annual cost-of-living allowance, which gives all members of Congress a boost of about 2.2% in their take-home pay starting in January. Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wisconsin, who every year stands up against pay increases, said that with the economy still weak and many Americans finding it hard to make ends meet, it was 'the wrong time for Congress to give itself a pay hike.' 'This automatic stealth pay raise system is just wrong,' he added. Feingold said that with an annual increase of about $3,400 slated for next year, an election year, members of Congress will have received a $21,000 raise in their pay over the past five years. The Senate, by a 60-34 margin, tabled or killed his amendment to a pending appropriations bill."

"I'm writing to ask you to join as a sponsor of S. 1497, Our Democracy, Our Airwaves Act, which is cosponsored by Senators John McCain, Russell Feingold and Richard Durbin. This legislation will help to reduce the demand for money in politics and help voters get more and better information about candidates and issues. The bill requires television and radio stations to air at least two hours per week of candidate issue discussion in the period before elections. It also enables qualifying candidates to air a limited number of free radio and television ads without having to raise huge amounts of money from wealthy contributors and special interests. And it close loopholes in a 30 year old law that is supposed to prevent stations from gouging candidates on advertising rates." Sign the letter to your Senator!

AP reports: "Civil rights groups and a senator criticized the Justice Department on Friday for rejecting plans by an employee group to hold a gay pride event at the agency's headquarters... Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., urged Ashcroft to reconsider the decision and threatened legislation if the matter weren't resolved... 'I find it particularly outrageous that the Department of Justice, whose mission is to ensure fairness for all Americans, would deprive its own staff members of the right to gather on public property,' Lautenberg wrote in a letter to Ashcroft. Lautenberg noted that Ashcroft was asked by Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., during his confirmation hearing in September 2001 whether he would continue to allow DOJ Pride [to] hold its annual meeting at the department's headquarters, as other groups and minority employees are permitted. Ashcroft responded, 'It would be my intention not to discriminate against any group that appropriately constituted in the Department of Justice.'"

AP reports: "One Democratic senator, Bob Graham of Florida, put the blame closer to home. Graham, a presidential hopeful, said the attacks might not have occurred if the Bush administration hadn't diverted military and intelligence resources from the fight against the al-Qaida network to the Iraq war. Monday's attacks Monday were among the deadliest against Americans since Sept. 11, 2001. Attackers shot their way into the housing compounds, then set off bombs packed into their cars... At a news conference, Graham said the Iraq war 'was a distraction. It took us off the track of the war on terror, which we were on a path to win.' He said Monday's attack 'could have been avoided if you had actually crushed the basic infrastructure of al-Qaida'... Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., shared Graham's views. Speaking on the Senate floor shortly before Graham's news conference, Feingold said he fears 'that our (anti-terrorism) mission has become obscured, and our approach unfocused.'"

"Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL)., is undeterred. He has formed a group of 'progressive' Senate Democrats that he hopes will help craft a bolder, more aggressive agenda than the one the party took to voters before last November's election. 'With the Republican monopoly on Congress and the White House, our voice is needed now more than ever,' Durbin said in an interview Thursday. 'We think there's power behind our ideas.' So far, the group has only about a half-dozen members, including Sens. Jon Corzine (NJ), Edward Kennedy (MA) and Russ Feingold (WI)... In the aftermath of the November elections, when the Democrats lost control of the Senate and failed for the fourth consecutive election to regain the House, many Democrats said it was time for a new strategy. As Durbin put it, '[Bush] swamped us. He grabbed the microphone and the message, and we were left behind. What we are trying to do is focus on an agenda and an approach that will help define the differences between the two parties.' "
with Kerry edging Edwards for second.
Reuters reports, "Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin vowed to block funding for the [Total Information Awareness] program now while it is still under development, until Congress can give it a thorough review. 'Our country must fight terrorism, but America should not unleash virtual bloodhounds to sniff into the financial, educational, travel and medical records of millions of Americans,' Wyden told reporters on Capitol Hill. Wyden has introduced an amendment to a large spending package being debated in the Senate that would ban any funding for the program. Feingold introduced separate legislation to suspend the project until Congress gets oversight of it. A third Democrat, Sen. Jon Corzine, dubbed the Total Information Awareness system 'Orwellian,' and a coalition of left- and right-wing groups also denounced the computer dragnet at a news conference."

"Of all the peculiarities, unanswered questions, and things that simply don't add up about the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the one aspect that keeps nagging at me revolves around our military's incredible lack of response to the hijacking of four airliners. Anyone who investigates this matter will soon find that the United States Air Force and the FAA both have established procedures that have been in place for at least 25 years regarding planes that veer abnormally off course. Specifically, federal law MANDATES that the Air Force must dispatch a plane to investigate why a certain craft has strayed from its predestined route. These interceptors are only allowed to shoot an airliner from the sky under orders from the President, but that doesn't negate that they are still required to investigate the situation in a timely manner...the Air Force KNEW that a jet was headed toward the Capitol, no planes were dispatched to intercept it. Who gave the orders for these planes to 'stand down.'"
The second weekly poll is over, and Al Gore wins again, with Howard Dean second.
Kevin McCauley writes: "The heartfelt outpouring of sympathy among Senators for the unabashed liberal Wellstone is a telling point. The former Senator was a man of conviction, and as noted in much of the coverage of his death--a Senator who often found himself on the losing side of a 99-1 vote, or 98-2 tally with fellow liberal Russ Feingold of Wisconsin. Perhaps the mourning Senators envied Wellstone for standing on principles. The Democrats will do a lot better if they show some of the spunk typified by Wellstone, rather than just positioning themselves as the Republican-lite party. A revitalized Democratic party could restore people's faith in Government, and inspire people in other lands about the vitality of the American system - more than any State Dept. propaganda program."
Senate Republicans voted 48-1 for W-ar, with only Lincoln Chafee (RI) opposed. Dems voted 29-21 for W-ar. Here is the Honor Roll: Akaka (HI), Bingaman (NM), Boxer (CA), Byrd (WV), Conrad (ND), Corzine (NJ), Dayton (MN), Durbin (IL), Feingold (WI), Graham (FL), Inouye (HI), Jeffords (I-VT), Kennedy (MA), Leahy (VT), Levin (MI), Mikulski (MD), Murray (WA), Reed (RI), Sarbanes (MD), Stabenow (MI), Wellstone (MN), Wyden (OR). Call your Senator at 202-224-3121 and express your feelings about their vote.
Thanks to Senator Daschle's tough stance on Bush's politicization of his planned invasion of Iraq, Congress is making significant changes to Bush's war resolution. Nevertheless, "Many Democrats believe Congress is moving too fast and the current resolution still gives Bush too much authority to use force without exhausting diplomatic efforts and international support. 'This proposal is unacceptable. The administration has been talking about war in Iraq for quite some time now,' said Sen. Russ Feingold, D-WI. 'Surely they had the time to draft a more careful, thoughtful proposal than the irresponsibly broad and sweeping language that they sent to Congress.' Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) will make a powerful speech on Friday, and Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) will try to offer alternative resolutions. But the White House says the current language is "take it or leave it." The crucial debate begins next week. Call your Representatives (202-224-3121) EVERY DAY and tell them No War in Iraq!
CNN reports, "Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), called it a 'non-starter' and an 'affront to the Constitution.' 'This proposal is a case of the administration telling Congress to stop asking questions and literally 'leaves it all to us.' To endorse such language would be irresponsible,' said Feingold. The language could lead to a 'miniature Armageddon' or 'potential World War III,' said Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), who said he will write an alternative resolution with fellow liberal Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), that would place more pre-conditions on Bush before he could use force in Iraq. 'Nothing in our intelligence suggests that Iraq is ready to attack Washington or Fort Lauderdale,' Hastings said. Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) agreed. 'There is no question that Saddam Hussein is not a nice person or that he's broken the resolutions of the UN, but that does not give us the power to pre-emptively strike a country,' he said. 'Once you start down that road, where do you stop?'" Stop Bush's War!
WashPost reports, "A conservative law school professor nominated by Resident Bush to a federal appeals court tried to assure the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday that he would be 'a judge who plays it straight' and who would not allow his personal opinions to affect his judicial rulings. 'I am telling you under oath that I will conscientiously enforce the law, including laws and precedents that I don't agree with,' Michael W. McConnell declared during his confirmation hearing." Now where have we heard THAT bushit before? John Ashcroft made EXACTLY the same promise, and Russ Feingold bought it - and Ashcroft has violated it every day since his swearing-in. Ditto Clarence Thomas. Fool me once, shame on you.. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thrice - shame on ALL Democrats! Bush has NO mandate - JUST SAY NO to Bush's right-wing Judges!!!
"Bush should ask Congress for authorization before launching an attack against Iraq, two Democrats said Thursday as the administration struggled in its push for international backing. 'The administration should not expect to commit American troops to war with a wink and a nod to Congress,' said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. 'There should be a full debate and a vote. That is what the Constitution prescribes, and that is what the American people expect.' And Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., said nothing short of formal approval would be acceptable. 'The Constitution says that Congress has the sole power to declare war," Feingold said in an interview. Not doing so, he said, "is an affront to Congress and to the American people.' The Bush administration takes the position it needs nothing beyond the consent Congress gave for the 1990-1991 war on Iraq to liberate Kuwait."
CNN reports "Thirty-one House members filed suit against President [sic] Bush in an effort to block the president from withdrawing from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. [The Pentagon is ready to begin work] on underground silos for missile interceptors in Alaska. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, the lead plaintiff, said the president [sic] does not have the authority to unilaterally withdraw from a treaty and should first seek the consent of Congress. 'The Constitution of the United States is being demolished and we need to challenge that in court,' he said. The lawsuit... states that while the Constitution is silent on the role of Congress in treaty terminations, treaties have the status of 'supreme law of the land' equivalent to federal laws and that laws can be repealed only by an act of Congress. [Senstor Russ Feingold tried unsuccessfully] to bring a resolution to the Senate floor stating that the president cannot withdraw from the treaty without Senate approval."
Begala points out that while Bush and the Republicans whine about judicial confirmation, the number of judges who have been confirmed by the Senate, now run by Democrats, far exceeds the number of judges confirmed by the Senate for President Clinton when the Republicans controlled the Senate. Why doesn't Bush nominate moderate judges and consult with the Judiciary Committee? Bush lost the popular vote by about 540,000 votes, and he has no mandate to pack the court with right wing judicial activists. Interestingly enough, Tucker avoids this issue, calls it "payback" and plays for his conservative base saying the Democrats are "in the pocket of the abortion industry." And all this time we thought Crossfire was supposed to be an intelligent debate.
"Bipartisanship works best to prevent a situation, and not clean up the mess that has occurred when warning signs were neglected. As we go further into pushing for such an investigation, we must keep the focus on the victims. As in any murder case, and this is such a case, those questions must be asked and they must be answered. We must connect with the voters as to why we are doing so - out of justice for the many victims who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001." So writes Mary MacElveen.
ABC's 'The Note' writes, "We DO have to wonder how a free-market, free-trading, anti-McCain-Feingold guy like Bush, just 16 months or so into his presidency, could have turned the clock back on the farm bill; turned his back on free trade - on the steel protection initiative - more than Bill Clinton ever did; and signed into law a campaign finance bill the White House maintains to this day is at least partly unconstitutional... We can't overstate the spitting disgust that a lot of businesspeople and conservatives openly express with [Bush]'s actions on these scores. They understand and appreciate that a president [sic] sometimes has to be political, but the combined effect of all of these compromises is turning some conservative stomachs. And maybe when Bush says he wants to 'change the tone in Washington,' he really JUST means Washington (not to parse words or anything), which would get him off the hook for [attacking] Texas Democratic Senate nominee Ron Kirk as an 'obstructionist.'"
"Secret court subpoenas, examinations of bookstore records, revised immigration policies and other uses of sweeping new powers have some Senate Democrats taking a new critical look at the USA Patriot Act, enacted in the aftermath of Sept. 11. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), the lone senator to vote against the measure last fall, has been its most vocal critic, warning that the act infringes on constitutional freedoms... Feingold is not alone in his concerns. He has been joined by other Democratic senators, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (VT), Richard Durbin (IL) and Maria Cantwell (WA). The act was hurriedly signed into law with overwhelming approval within six weeks of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington - without hearings or without being marked up by a congressional committee… Feingold and Rep. Patsy Mink (D-HI) joined a coalition of groups to talk about infringements on constitutional freedoms in the wake of the act." So reports The Hill.
On this Crossfire, John McCain shucks and jives about his loyalty to the Republican Party while it works to undercut pretty much everything he holds dear. He says he doesn't have a problem with that, but Carlson may be right -- McCain and his supporters have no where to go.
Ever wonder why Bush and Ashcroft consider Affirmative Action bad, but racial profiling good? After all, in both
cases, assumptions are made about a person on the basis of their skin color, right? The American Civil Liberties
Union recently criticized racial profiling legislation sponsored by Senators George Voinovich and Mike DeWine
(both Ohio Republicans) as "insufficient to combat the realities of racial profiling." Instead, the ACLU favors the End
Racial Profiling Act of 2001, sponsored by Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Rep. John Conyers (D-MI). The bill
would prohibit racial profiling, establish remedies for victims and provide for data collection. The bill has bipartisan
support from 16 Senators and 92 House members.
"As the Federal Election Commission begins the task of writing and implementing a soft-money ban and other sweeping changes contained in the new campaign finance laws, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is calling on two Republican commissioners to recuse themselves from the process. In a letter to FEC Chairman David Mason and Commissioner Bradley Smith, McCain and other key sponsors of his reform legislation [Feingold, Meehan, Shays] - asked Smith and Mason to remove themselves from the agency's 'rulemaking' efforts because of their controversial involvement in the Capitol Hill debate over the measure. 'By your inappropriate and ill-advised intervention into the Congressional debate, and through other actions opposing passage of the Act, you have impaired your ability to credibly fulfill your duties as Federal Election Commissioners to fairly write implementing regulations for this new law," the April 10 letter stated." So writes Amy Keller.
"Senate Republicans conceded defeat on Tuesday in their effort to kill legislation to reduce the influence of money in politics and, in a sudden reversal, called for prompt passage of the legislation, likely on Wednesday. Seven years in the making, the bill would ban unlimited contributions to national political parties, sharply reduce donations to state and local parties, and restrict broadcast ads by outside groups shortly before elections. 'It's time to bring this to a conclusion,' declared Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott [R-MS]. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle [D-SD] said he would proceed with a previously scheduled vote on Wednesday to end debate. If he musters the needed 60 votes in the 100-member chamber to prevail, as expected, the Senate would then move to final passage, with a vote tentatively set for mid-afternoon. 'We look forward to wrapping up this bill tomorrow,' said Sen. Mitch McConnell [R-KY] a chief foe of the bill. 'We know it is essentially over.'"
Senator Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) hopes for a filibuster to block campaign finance reform have been crushed. Senators Fritz Hollings (D-SC) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) declared their support for McCain-Feingold, bringing the total to 60 - the number needed to defeat a filibuster. That means McConnell will have to fight this battle in Federal court - which will ultimately put the issue before the Felonious Five. Stay tuned...
"In the run-up to Bush's signing of the USA Patriot Act on October 25, the major papers were spiritless about the provisions in the bill that were horrifying to civil libertarians. It would have only have taken a few fierce columns or editorials, such as were profuse after November 15, to have given frightened politicians cover to join the only bold soul in the US Senate, Russell Feingold of Wisconsin. Now it was Feingold, remember, whose vote back in the spring let Ashcroft's nomination out of the Judiciary Committee, at a time when most of his Democratic colleagues were roaring to the news cameras about Ashcroft's racism and contempt for due process. The Times and the Post both editorialized against Ashcroft's nomination. But then, when the rubber met the road, and Ashcroft sent up the Patriot bill, which vindicated every dire prediction of the spring, all fell silent except for Feingold." So write Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair.
The St. Petersburg Times writes, "During the confirmation hearing of Attorney General John Ashcroft, Democratic senators wanted to know whether Ashcroft's religious and ideological conservatism would influence federal law enforcement on controversial social issues. At the time, Ashcroft promised to apply the law objectively, even if it meant going against his personal beliefs. Now senators who took him at his word must feel betrayed." In other words, Ashcroft Lied. Which is exactly what we said during his hearings (http://democrats.com/ashcroftlied). Senator Feingold, are you listening?
Can anyone who reads a newspaper doubt that Senator John McCain is right when he calls our current campaign finance system "corrupt"? The only reason his observation is news is that it is a breathtaking admission of honesty from a Republican, which is rare enough to be newsworthy.
John Dean writes: "No hearings were held in either the House or Senate on the USA PATRIOT Act, and few — if any — members of Congress were really aware of what was actually in this massive, complex, highly technical 30,000-word statute...The reach of this new law is far beyond those who appear involved in the Sept. 11 attacks. The USA PATRIOT Act adds a new, and fourth, definition of 'domestic terrorism.' In doing so, they have made many home-grown political activists that have protested their opposition to the programs of the World Trade Organization on the streets of Seattle and Washington into terrorists." Dean adds that, "The USA PATRIOT Act was jammed through the House and Senate, with those calling for regular order being labeled unpatriotic." Many Democrats reportedly opposed this bill, but they were cowed by being called 'unpatriotic,' and reckoned it would pass anyway. Russ Feingold (D-WI) was the only Senator with the guts to stand against this tyrannical bill.
"Bush on Friday signed a sweeping anti-terrorism bill into law, giving police and intelligence agencies vast new powers to 'counter a threat like no other our nation has ever faced.'" Using Orwellian RoveSpeak, Bush said, "Today, we take an essential step in defeating terrorists while protecting the constitutional rights of all Americans." Say what? Is he protecting our rights by giving "police wide-ranging new anti-terrorism powers to secretly search people's homes and business records and to eavesdrop on telephone and computer conversations?" Said Russ Feingold (D-WI), "This bill does not strike the right balance between empowering law enforcement and protecting civil liberties." Russ Feingold was the only Senator to vote against the bill.
"The Capitol and office buildings for the Senate and House of Representatives will be closed starting tomorrow to conduct tests that can detect the bacteria that cause anthrax...The decision to conduct widespread environmental testing in and around the Capitol came in response to Daschle's announcement that 31 people…were exposed to the potentially deadly bacteria when a contaminated letter was opened there Monday...Later in the day, Sen. Russell Feingold's (D-Wis.) office [next to Daschle's] announced that two members of his staff also tested positively for exposure to the bacteria…In addition, anthrax spores were also detected in a Senate mail room in the Senate Dirkson building, sources said…Hastert also reported that a suspicious package that came to his office…It remained unclear as of midday today whether the anthrax spores sent to Daschle's office had indeed been milled to a very fine particle size as some sources had reported yesterday."
The Senate and the House approved the most far-reaching assault on the bill of rights in American history. The Senate voted 96-1 for S. 1510, following the overwhelming defeat of 3 amendments by Russ Feingold (83-13, 90-7, and 89-8). Republican leaders then railroaded a similar bill through the House by 337-79, replacing the PATRIOT bill that came out of the House Judiciary Committee. Stay tuned for more analysis...
Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), who cast a key vote FOR John Ashcroft, is now exercising some much-needed oversight over Ashcroft's attempt to rush the repeal of the Bill of Rights through the Senate. Feingold insisted on a Senate debate on S. 1510 so he could offer 4 crucial amendments: "Feingold wants to eliminate a provision in the bill that would allow police to search suspects' homes secretly, narrow a provision that allows federal officials to wiretap telephones, keep the FBI from being able to access Americans' personal records and clarify the federal government's ability to wiretap computers." Call your Senators (202-224-3121) and urge them to defend the Constitution by supporting the Feingold amendments to S. 1510.
House Republicans are doing everything possible to kill the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform plan - known in the House as Shays-Meehan. There will be only one day of debate on Thursday, with an immediate vote. Key members of the Congressional Black Caucus have endorsed the bill, so the only forces trying to kill it are Republicans. They say the public does NOT care about this vote. Prove them wrong - make your Representative's phone ring off the hook! Call 202-224-3121 every hour until the vote is taken on Thursday.
According to former Speaker Jim Wright (D-TX), "House Republican leaders are maneuvering to sidetrack the McCain-Feingold campaign-reform bill, scheduled for debate in the House in July... Dennis Hastert and Majority Whip Tom DeLay have a new ploy: Let the matter come to a vote, but adopt an amended version to require a House-Senate conference.
Ohio Republican Bob Ney is drafting the diversionary language. If at least one amendment can be attached, Hastert may quietly appoint House conferees committed to opposing any conference agreement and stalling the bill to death behind closed doors." You said it, Jim! Hey Jim - why don't you run for Senate next year against Phil Gramm? It's about time he got himself a job in the private sector that he worships so devoutly!
"Yesterday's Supreme Court ruling [5-4] upholding [hard money] limits on political party spending represents a reprieve for congressional Democrats, who had feared they would be dramatically outspent by the GOP if the caps were lifted. Campaign finance experts also said the ruling could boost the prospects for passage in the House" of the McCain-Feingold bill banning soft money. The dissenters were the usual Federalist Society Four -- Scalia, Thomas, Rehnquist and Kennedy. In an earlier Washington Post article, Thomas is quoted parroting the usual 'money = free speech' propaganda put out by the Federalist Society. Another Fed-Soc spiel is that lifting such caps would "strengthen the two parties " This really means that powerful networks, such as the Bush 'Pioneers' and corporations, would strengthen their grip on the parties.
In Sierra Leone, Angola and other areas, the already difficult lives of citizens are made all but unbearable by terrorists struggling for control of diamond mines and trade. One favorite form of intimidation: amputating the limbs of small children. Now a bill formulated by two Dems (Feingold and Durbin) and a Republican (DeWine) and supported by Tony Hall (D-OH) and Frank Wolf (R-VA) calls for an end to the trade in "conflict diamonds." We laud and support this critical effort. We also suggest that the bill include funding for isotopic techniques that can identify the geographic origin of diamonds (which would make it easier to enforce the ban on illegal stones). For more on this new technique, see http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/03/010313073810.htm AND/OR http://www.findarticles.com/m1200/11_157/61291653/p1/article.jhtml
Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) is completely drunk with power. Even though the Senate passed the McCain-Feingold bill on April 2 - 37 days ago! - Lott has refused to send the bill to the House. Normally, this is done in 5 days. In a remarkable show of anger, 14 Republicans joined the Democrats in a 61-36 vote denouncing Lott's action as "an arbitrary action taken to deliberately thwart the will of the majority of the Senate." Which leaves us wondering - do 36 Senators believe the Majority Leader can veto the votes of the other 99 Senators? Wake up, folks - the Republican Party is truly being run by fascists.
Bush nominee Ted Olson has been caught lying about his central role in Richard Mellon Scaife's "Arkansas Project," the Get-Clinton effort that eventually led to Clinton's impeachment. What is the truth about the "Arkansas Project?" Some of it is hidden in the "Shaheen Report," a Justice Department probe of alleged payments to Whitewater witness David Hale. Who was David Hale's lawyer? Ted Olson. Now is the time for Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena the "Shaheen Report," to find out more about Olson's role in the treasonous conspiracy to destroy President Clinton. Call the following Senators at 202-224-3121: Patrick Leahy (VT), Edward Kennedy (MA), Joseph Biden (DE), Herb Kohl (WI), Dianne Feinstein (CA), Russell Feingold (WI), Charles Schumer (NY), Richard Durbin (IL), Maria Cantwell (WA). Read more about the Shaheen Report at the below site (Disregard the contact info from 1999, which is now outdated).
Ted Olson has been lying to the Senate Judiciary Committee about his role in the Arkansas Project, the $2.3 million project to "get Clinton" undertaken by the right-wing rag American Spectator with funding from Richard Mellon Scaife, the ATM of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Now is the time to expose this entire "get Clinton" effort for all of America to see. We demand FULL and OPEN hearings into Olson's lies. Call your Senator (202-224-3121) today - especially if his name is Feingold!
The Washington Post is finally getting past its loathing of Bill Clinton, and has discovered what we all know - the Bu$h administration is rotten to the core. "What caught our attention at the 100-day mark... wasn't so much a matter of tone as of smell: the smell - you might even call it stink - of buying and selling access. President [sic] Bush and his party campaigned on a promise of restoring honor to the Oval Office... The fact that the Bush administration, even before most of its officials are nominated or confirmed, feels the need to begin a corrupting and humiliating money chase reflects the dominance that campaign finance has acquired in official life. President [sic] Bush could do something about that: He could promise his support for the McCain-Feingold reform bill and urge the House to get serious on it. Failing that, any change in tone is likely to be overcome by an all-too-familiar odor." Hey - in another decade or two, the Post might even report that Bush stole the election!
"The Senate voted today to approve [59-41] the most wide-ranging overhaul of the nation's campaign finance law since the aftermath of the Watergate scandal, shifting the struggle over the influence of money and politics into a divided House...Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, condemned the [McCain-Feingold] bill last week, and Representative Tom DeLay, the majority whip from Texas, has pledged to 'try anything I can' to kill it."
"On a 84-16 vote, the chamber agreed to amend the bill to raise so-called 'hard money' contributions to candidates from the current limit of $1,000 per year to a new limit of $2,000. In addition, the chamber raised the annual individual contribution limits from $25,000 to $37,500 overall for candidates and political parties for use in direct campaign expenses." Also, the Senate squelched Chuck Hagel's (R-NE) bill that challenged the McCain-Feingold soft money ban. The White House had collaborated with Hagel on his bill to undermine campaign finance reform. The odds say Bush will veto McCain-Feingold, even though he claims to support soft money bans. Don't be surprised if Bush reverses himself like he did on CO2 limits. He is a "Read My Lips" Bush after all.
The McCain-Feingold bill is still alive and kicking. A challenge to the bill's ban on issue ads was voted down, as well as the "non-severability" amendment that threatened to kill it. "On a 57-43 vote, the Senate rejected a so-called 'non-severability' amendment that would have voided all three major provisions of the bill if the courts ruled any one of them unconstitutional." But the Senate did reach a compromise on hard money limits (see next item).
Shrub suffered two huge losses in Senate votes on campaign finance reform. By 60-40, the Senate defeated Chuck Hagel's (R-NE) amendment to keep soft money from corporations and unions. By 52-47, the Senate defeated a tripling of hard money limits from $1,000 to $3,000 per wealthy individual. Bush has publicly supported Hagel's efforts to undercut McCain-Feingold, so this represents Bush's first major legislative defeat. Bush is not invincible - when Democrats are united and fight on principle, we can win.
"If the senators need some encouragement--if they need to know that Americans indeed care--then let the few of us who can afford the time to be here do more to show we care. Let us walk continuously around our Capitol, day and night, while the Senate struggles to free our democracy from the corrupting clutches of big money. While they are doing their best, we will be doing our best with this walking prayer vigil. Those at home, I hope, will call their senators again and demand the passage of McCain-Feingold in a way that will outlaw soft money (huge contributions given by corporations to parties, who then pass it to candidates) and preserve the existing $1,000 limit on hard money contributions (the money given directly by individuals to candidates)." So writes Granny D.
In a blow to Bush and a boost to Senators Feingold (D-WI) and McCain (R-AZ), the Senate overwhelmingly rejected an effort to require unions and corporations to get permission from members or shareholders before using certain funds for politics. Proposed by Orrin Hatch (R-UT), this amendment was considered a poison pill that would have killed the McCain-Feingold bill. The Senators also voted 70-to-30 to require the broadcasting industry to provide discounted television advertising rates for political commercials in choice time slots.
"On Tuesday, March 20, 2001, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell made what ought to be one of the most outrageous statements in American political history: 'The American people are more concerned about static cling than campaign finance...' It doesn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative. If you love this country, if you hate what our political system has become, that statement ought to make you mad as hell." So writes Democrats.com member Ronald Dickens of Wichita, and he's mad enough to do something about it - collecting dozens of dryer sheets to send off to Republican Senators. Send your personalized "Stop Corruption Now - Pass McCain-Feingold" dryer sheet today to your Senator, Washington DC 20510.
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is the leading proponent of corrupt government. For the past 8 years, he has blocked all votes on campaign finance reform. In the first day of Senate debate, McConnell declared that the public was not interested in cleaning up our corrupt political system. "It ranks right up there with static cling," he said. Tell McConnell and his fellow Republicans that you DO care! Take a dryer sheet - new or used - and write "End corrupt politics - support McCain-Feingold!" Then mail it to your Republican Senators (Senator X, Washington DC, 20510). Send one every day highlighting the latest Republican big money sellout.
Granny D walked with Senators McCain and Feingold this morning as they walked to offices of both the Republican and Democratic parties. The senators spoke in front of the two buildings to say that the time to eliminate soft money had come. At noon, Doris spoke on the Capitol steps to a crowd of reform supporters, including a woman who came from California for the occasion, and a mother of two small children who came (with children in tow) from Pennsylvania because, she said, "this is the most important decision that will be made in my lifetime." Inside, debate began on the bill. Chances for passage of a clean bill seem fairly dim. After her speech, she walked seven times around the Capitol (three and a half miles) with friends. She says she will begin again at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
"McCain-Feingold is a pretty modest reform in light of the problem. If it doesn't pass, we'll have to throw up our hands on money in politics the way we have on guns in schools. It will be another national disgrace that we just can't do anything about." So says Mary McGrory. We love you dear.
"With a few days to go before the Senate takes up campaign finance reform, Bush has begun to intervene to influence the outcome. Yesterday the White House issued a set of absurdly weak 'principles' to govern changes in the fund-raising laws that would do virtually nothing to stem the flow of money. The White House is also reportedly supporting Senator Chuck Hagel's efforts to push his own deficient bill as an alternative to the McCain- Feingold soft-money ban. With these steps, Mr. Bush would preserve the unbridled fund-raising that has corrupted American politics." So writes the New York Times.
A massive and unprecedented ocean of corporate and right-wing special-interest money helped Shrub steal the White House. Most Republicans in Congress - led by shameless Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) - think this thoroughly corrupt system simply isn't corrupt enough! McConnell is lining up the troops to kill the modest McCain-Feingold reforms.
When he voted to confirm John Ashcroft, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) said he hoped Bush would reciprocate by naming Justice Ronnie White as a federal judge. Feingold's plea was seconded by Dick Gephardt (D-MO) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus during their meeting with Bush last week. It took less than a day for two anonymous Bush aides to say "fuggedaboutit!" Wake up, Democrats - you'll get NOTHING from the far-right Bush administration. Senator Feingold, can you take that vote back?
Like most of Bush's propoganda, the talk of election reform is just window dressing to get people like Tom Daschle and Russ Feingold to give him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Of course, he doesn't mean a word of it, not a word.
"[Feingold] said that he might be naive, but we think he's just plain delusional. The Republicans are run like the Mafia; they'll do just what Lott and Bush tell them to." Democrats.com co-founder Bob Fertik had a few other carefully-chosen (well, almost!) words for the Senate Democrats during an interview with Salon.
Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) hit the nail on the head when he said "maybe I'm naive," before announcing that he would be the only Democrat on the Judiciary Committee supporting Ashcroft. Feingold outlined several "conditions" for his vote, such as Republicans nominating Justice Ronnie White for the next available Federal judgeship. What planet have you been living on for the past 8 years, Russ?? No judge will be appointed in this administration unless they are part of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy centered in the Federalist Society!
You would think that the number one pre-requisite for being Attorney General is honesty. But for Republicans, and the lobotomized Russ Feingold, dishonesty doesn't disqualify you from upholding the "rule of law." It's that old GOP double standard at work again. Democrats lie and should be struck down: Republicans lie and should be embraced as people of integrity. That's a crime. But the second crime is that the Democrats in Congress let them get away with it. As for Feingold, someone should check to see if he's from another planet.
Only a week ago, Unpresident Bush made "civility" the centerpiece of his inaugural address. But his Republican Party is already on the attack, calling groups like People for the American Way, NOW, and NARAL "radicals," and accusing them of running a "smear campaign." This is a major test for Bush - is he going to fire Jack Oliver, or is Bush going to break his very first promise after just a week in office? We're watching!!
According to Charles Lewis of the Center for Public Integrity, "how Bush handles [campaign finance reform] will set the tone for his presidency. His hold on power could not be more tenuous. He is the first president in 124 years to occupy the White House without winning the popular vote; the other three chief executives to attempt to govern in that predicament were not re-elected... Will Bush display statesmanlike leadership emblematic of a "uniter not a divider" and boldly break through entrenched Washington inertia and cynical assumptions, achieving a substantive solution? Or will he merely add to the partisan din and ignore or sidestep the subject, the way presidents have for the last 20 years?"
Due to Joe Biden's inept questioning of John Ashcroft, we never get to the heart of Ashcroft's racist sympathies as revealed in his Southern Partisan interview. Of course, Joe Biden was equally inept during the Anita Hill hearings. But, you can be certain that Good 'Ol boy Johnnie was speaking in code words that every closet racist could understand. There is a reason, after all, that all the Bob Jones, Confederacy sympathisizers and David Duke supporters love the guy to bits, isn't that obvious? The Democratic senators(with the exception of Kennedy, Durbin and Leahy) just seem, frankly, too dumb to crack the code it seems. Rusell Feingold, in particular, is either completely loopy or had a frontal ethical lobotomy.
Can the "liberal" Democratic Senators finally show that they can match the conservatives' conviction to their cause? Whatever you say about the right wing, they consistently display a deranged passion for their cause. The Democrats, however, are too often concerned about playing by the rules and acting polite. Take Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin), who seems to have had a political lobotomy. Senator Feingold has stated that Ashcroft is just fine with him -- and that Bush deserves to appoint his own cabinet. Is the man a fool, desirous of some political favor from Bush, or just milktoast? How about all of the above. How about if the Democrats don't stop playing nice-nice, Ashcroft will be confirmed and let loose a reign of terror with America's justice system.
BuzzFlash got your attention, didn't they! Well, Bush hasn't appointed Duke, he has appointed his spiritual first cousin Ashcroft. Faced with a holier-than-thou attorney who lied several times over the course of three days of testimony, the Democrats (with the exception of Kennedy, Leahy and Durbin) performed in their usual stumbling Hamlet fashion. Ashcroft generously offered them the opportunity to catch him in his prevaricating, but the ever-congenial Democrats chose not to avail themselves of the offer.
I see the past 12 days as a fascinating glimpse into the future. Email in this case has served almost as a form of telepathy. 10,000 people were all able to communicate to each other at the same time, "I want to go demonstrate, but I don't want to be the only one." Via email, thousands of people communicated to each other that they wanted to come. This solves the most fundamental problem of organizing: getting everyone who wants to take a step forward to all take it at the same time (because nobody wants to be the only one).
