It's a sad commentary that we guarantee the folks who handle our mail better pay than the ones who handle our children's minds. Teachers from state to state, even county to county, may have different pay scales with different prospects for increasing it. In Mississippi, for example, writes Sid Salter, "The "Southeastern Average" for teacher pay is rarely a stable number, for whenever any state in the mixes raises the pay for their teachers, Mississippi's ranking goes down." We think it's time for a national minimum pay scale for teachers - one that could be adjusted up if needed region to region, but would guarantee all teachers everywhere - just like federal workers - a fair base wage.
