Investigation Finds Medicare Under Thompson Is Outrageously Mismanaged, and Spiraling Downward
Tommy Thompson

It's tough enough to be dependent on Medicare without being forced to deal with the "freemarket" (i.e. anti-consumer) mindset now infecting every aspect of the government thanks to Bush. HHS head Tommy Thompson is a freemarketer - he, like all other freemarketers believe everything should be privatized, including Medicare. In fact, one freemarket group, the American Assoc. of Physicians and Surgeons has actually called on its members to WITHOLD services from Medicare patients. What better way to force Medicare into privatization than to sabotage it completely and watch it self-destruct (who cares if you have to sacrifice a few million elderly folks, right?). This appears to be just what Thompson et al. are doing. Instead of fixing what's wrong, they are systematically witholding any remedy. An investigation of Medicare by an internal watchdog has just released a report on the state of the agency that will appall you.

Judge Blasts Tommy Thompson for Spending Taxpayer $ on Everything but the Folks HHS Is Supposed to Help
Tommy Thompson

Since heading the Dept. of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson has done absolutely nothing but spend millions on meaningless PR. He has failed to accomplish a single thing on behalf of those he is supposed to be serving. Yet now we find him whining before a judge that he thinks a mailing required by statute to inform Medicare recipients of their rights is too expensive and too much of a hassle. Of course, this comes right after Thompson dropped $35 million in taxpayers money on yet another PR campaign. The judge said "The Secretary's logic is similar to that of a child who kills his parents and then seeks pity as an orphan." Btw - don't expect rightwing corporate front group "Citizens against Government Waste" to complain about Thompson. They're too busy bellowing about a million dollar, traffic-reducing bike path being put in by a progressive community in the northwest to worry about tens of millions wasted on ads and a bunch of old folks on Medicare!

Health & Human Services Department Under Tommy Thompson Is Long on Show, Short on Services
Tommy Thompson

Under Tommy Thompson, the Department of Health and Human Services has done almost nothing to promote health or dispense real services. Instead, its "actions" consist of a series of vague initiatives, like "developing a tool chest of options" for helping small hospitals (why not just give them needed money?) and handing out $2,000 (i.e., meaningless) grants to encourage communities to promote exercise, dieting and abstinence from tobacco (like this isn't being done already). While claiming PR credit for a reduced teen birthrate that occurred under Clinton, he's spending millions on things like running a contest to rename the dept., conducting a study of disabled persons' needs (he already know what should be done - why not just do it?), and conducting a study of how to help rural communities (while offering no real help, of course!). We think Thompson is systematically withholding real help from the poor and disadvantaged as a prelude for shoving the whole job off onto church charities.

Tommy Thompson Named Porker of the Month by CAGW for Stupid Name Change Scheme
Tommy Thompson

The Citizens Against Government Waste's Porker of the Month prize is given to those officials who have had their snouts buried deepest in the tax dollar trough. This month's winner was a shoo-in: Tommy Thompson. Says CAGW: "On taking office at an agency that has massive waste and mismanagement, what kind of reform does the new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, pursue? No kidding, he holds a contest to rename the 36 year-old Health Care Financing Administration - which oversees Medicare and Medicaid - because, "It's hard to love something called HCFA." For wasting valuable time, political capital, and public money on an effort reminiscent of the old Soviet approach to government reform, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) names Tommy Thompson its Porker of the Month for July 2001." CAGW doubts a name change, in any case, will aid the agency, which "like a lot of middle-aged individuals, is confused and mismanaged."
