Who Killed Paul Wellstone?
25-Oct-04
Paul Wellstone

"American Assassination: The Strange Death of Senator Paul Wellstone" is a powerful new book by Four Arrows and Jim Fetzer. "Understanding the crash, they believe, requires establishing why the King Air suddenly stopped communicating. Another man on his way to the funeral, driving within a couple blocks of the airport at the time of the crash experienced otherworldly cell-phone interference. He reported hearing a sound 'between a roar and loud humming voice...oscillating...screeching and humming noise.' Most responsible for narrowing the authors' search for a cause was the blue smoke typical of electrical fires that streamed out of the King Air's sheared fuselage for hours after the crash. In an arresting passage, the authors cite a Time magazine article describing microwave weapons the US is developing to knock out enemy electronics. Supposedly they're capable of unleashing in an instant as much power as the Hoover Dam cranks out in a day."

October 25: Remember Paul Wellstone and Those He Loved
25-Oct-04
Paul Wellstone

"Two years ago today, a plane crash took the lives of Paul and Sheila Wellstone, their daughter Marcia, and three campaign aides - Mary McEvoy, Tom Lapic, and Will McLaughlin. On that horrible day, it seemed like the ground had fallen out from underneath all of us. It was, and still is, hard to imagine that they are gone. Here at Wellstone Action, our work is focused on building progressive politics for the future. Yet as much as we look forward to that future, today is a day of remembrance. We miss our friends. We remember their commitment to the values we share, but more important we miss their presence in our lives - their sense of humor, their joy of life, and their friendship."

Wellstone Crash 'Investigation' Ignores Electromagnetic Weapons
03-Jan-04
Paul Wellstone

Jackson Thoreau writes, "At a meeting full of war veterans in Willmar, Minn., days before his death, Wellstone told attendees that Cheney told him, 'If you vote against the war in Iraq, the Bush administration will do whatever is necessary to get you. There will be severe ramifications for you and the state of Minnesota.'" Was Wellstone's plane brought down by Cheney operatives using electromagnetic weapons? "Lawrence Judd, an Illinois attorney, wrote the NTSB to ask whether it has or will investigate the possibility that EMF weapons were used to bring down the planes of Senators Wellstone and Carnahan. Robert Benzon wrote him back, thusly, 'The NTSB is unaware of any mobile EM force or EM pulse weapon system capable of disabling an aircraft at the ground-to-air ranges that existed in either of the accidents you mention in your email.'" Hmm - check out the EM devices at http://www.amazing1.com/emp.htm

Evidence Indicates that Wellstone Crash was No Accident
27-Nov-03
Paul Wellstone

Jim Fetzer writes in an Op-Ed: "For nearly a year now, evidence has been accumulating about the event that ended the life of this magnificent human being. Whatever caused the crash was not the plane, the pilots or the weather. In spite of what you may have heard, the plane was exceptional, the pilots well-qualified and the weather posed no significant problems. Even the National Transportation Safety Board's own simulations of the plane, the pilots and the weather were unable to bring the plane down... The politics of the situation were astonishing. The senator was pulling away from the hand-picked candidate of the Bush machine. Its opportunity to seize control of the U.S. Senate was slipping from its grasp. Its vaunted 'invincibility' was being challenged by an outspoken critic of its most basic values. Targeted for elimination, he was going to survive. Here's one man's opinion: Under such conditions, the temptation to take him out may have been irresistible."

Norm Coleman Trashes Paul Wellstone's Memory
08-Apr-03
Paul Wellstone

"'To be very blunt and God watch over Paul's soul, I am a 99% improvement over Paul Wellstone,' Coleman, R-Minn., said in a front-page story published in Roll Call. 'Just about on every issue.' Coleman said he was stressing his ties to Bush and told the newspaper that Wellstone 'was never with Bush.' The Roll Call story caused an uproar among Wellstone's former staffers. U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., called for Coleman to apologize, saying his remarks were inappropriate, disrespectful and 'an unnecessary attack on a leader our state continues to mourn.' 'Paul Wellstone represented Minnesota families with integrity, respect and passion for 12 years,' McCollum said. 'Senator Coleman's remarks attacking our late senator were tasteless and do absolutely nothing to benefit the Minnesota families he now serves.'" Call Coleman's office: (202) 224-5641.

Wellstone's Plane was Fine - What About Sabotage?
06-Mar-03
Paul Wellstone

AP reports, "The airplane that crashed and killed Sen. Paul Wellstone had a clean maintenance history and underwent a detailed, scheduled inspection two months before it crashed... The NTSB will try to determine a probable cause of the crash after final reports are filed, which could take more than a month. So far, speculation among aviation experts has focused on possible pilot error, as well as potential icing. The board's investigation has emphasized the backgrounds of pilots Richard Conry and Michael Guess, including some criticism of their cockpit skills and tendencies. But investigators also have noted that the Eveleth airport's navigational beacon wasn't working precisely on a day when clouds and visibility were low." But what about sabotage of the plane before takeoff, or an electronic attack on the plane in flight? We demand an investigation of ALL possibilities!

Paul Wellstone Was an Outspoken Advocate of Protecting East Timorese Human Rights and Democracy
06-Dec-02
Paul Wellstone

Paul Wellstone, 1998: "I don't know why we are not more insistent on these governments who attack, torture, rape, and murder their citizens to abide by elementary standards of decency. Surely we can at least send a clear signal to the Suharto regime that we support democracy, that we support fair labor practices, that we support human rights, and that we will not stand by idly as this regime, the Suharto regime, continues to repress its citizens." In 2000: "Justice and accountability are important foundations for a new democracy in East Timor, as well as the democratization process in Indonesia. Human rights must be protected and international humanitarian law adhered to, not only in East Timor, but also as a means to preventing such atrocities in the future. Justice and accountability are also critical to reconciliation and healing in East Timor."

Mechanics at Eveleth Say Wellstone Plane Circled Twice, Had Multiple Systems Failures
04-Dec-02
Paul Wellstone

Cheryl Seal writes: "A courageous and conscientious citizen in Northern Minnesota who has tried repeatedly to get this revealing information out through the usual channels (FBI, NTSB) with little luck relates how mechanics heard Wellstone's plane circle the Eveleth Airport twice, a plane in distress with multiple systems failures. Meanwhile, CNN and the other media continue to disseminate the 'tired pilot-ice' red herrings. Why?"

Wellstone Sons Hire Top Lawyers to Investigate Fatal Crash
16-Nov-02
Paul Wellstone

"Sam Kaplan, legal adviser to Mark and David Wellstone, confirmed Wednesday that Mike Ciresi and Roberta Walburn have been retained by the Wellstone family to consider possible legal action in connection with the Oct. 25 charter airplane crash in Eveleth. Ciresi and Walburn teamed up on litigation that resulted in the state's $6.1 billion tobacco settlement. Previously, Walburn had worked for Wellstone in Washington, D.C., for one year as a legislative assistant. 'I think we have selected not only the best firm, but also the best friends,' Kaplan said. He said Ciresi, Walburn and others at the Minneapolis-firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi are 'extraordinary friends' of the family. Ciresi said his firm is looking into the facts surrounding the crash and will make a decision at some point on what action to take. 'I'm not going to comment any further than that,' Ciresi said."

Garrison Keillor Says Republicans Must Answer for Norm Coleman's Evil Campaign
13-Nov-02
Paul Wellstone

Garrison Keillor writes, "The hoots and cackles of Republicans reacting to my screed against Norman Coleman, the ex-radical, former Democratic, now compassionate conservative senator-elect from Minnesota, was all to be expected, given the state of the Republican Party today. Its entire ideology, top to bottom, is We-are-not-Democrats, We-are-the-unClinton, and if it can elect an empty suit like Coleman, on a campaign as cheap and cynical and unpatriotic as what he waged right up to the moment Paul Wellstone's plane hit the ground, then Republicans are perfectly content. They are Republicans first and Americans second... To exploit 9/11 and the deaths of those innocent people on that beautiful day in Manhattan -- to appropriate that day and infer so clearly that there is a Republican and a Democratic side to it, is offensive to our national memory and obscenely evil, and it was rewarded by the voters of Minnesota."

Ventura Spits on Wellstone's Grave by Appointing Crony as Senator
04-Nov-02
Paul Wellstone

Paul Wellstone's death left the Senate tied at 49D-49R, with 1 independent - Jim Jeffords - casting the deciding vote with Democrats. But now MN Gov. Jesse Ventura (I-Bozo) has replaced Wellstone with a Reform Party crony, Dean Barkley. Barkley received 7% of the vote in 1996, when Wellstone beat Rudy Boschwitz 50%-41%.Ventura spit on Paul Wellstone's grave by appointing the man Wellstone clobbered by 50%-7%! This makes the Senate 49D-49R-2I, giving Barkley the DECIDING vote until MN certifies the winner - Walter Mondale - in 2 weeks. Barkely can do TREMENDOUS damage in those 2 weeks by supporting right-wing Republican judges and a right-wing Republican budget. And it makes it CRUCIAL for Jean Carnahan to hold her seat in MO, or the Senate will have 50 Republican votes - plus Dick Cheney's tiebreaker - until January. Get Out The Vote - especially in MN and MO!

Win It for Wellstone - Take Back Our Government
02-Nov-02
Paul Wellstone

Marc Ash in Truthout points out that it isn't anger motivating the no-class right-wing critics in their disrespectful criticisms of Wellstone's memorial: "it was fear...The C-SPAN cameras showed frequent images of prominent political figures in the crowd, faces we all know. But it's not those faces that the industry lobbyists and their political cronies have to worry about. It's the faces you didn't recognize...faces of young Minnesotans with tears streaming down their faces over the loss of one man -- Paul Wellstone -- who they knew in their hearts fought for them...faces filled with rage and resolve...Yes, it became a political rally. But it was much, much more than that...it became an agenda for reclaiming government for the people. It became a rallying cry for American unity." What more fitting tribute to Wellstone could his family have planned than that?

Peggy Noonan 'Writes' a Letter from Paul Wellstone - This is the One of the Most Offensive Things You Will EVER Read
01-Nov-02
Paul Wellstone

In this column, Peggy Noonan pretends that she is Paul Wellstone writing a letter from beyond. "That memorial rally was . . . something. I watched it from where I am, in the place beyond. It's wonderful here. You'll be amazed at what I think is one of the best parts. Two words: No politics. I love it. Who knew? But we have to talk. I know what you were trying to do the other night, or what you sort of meant to do. But it was bad... You hurt a lot of people." Why hasn't the media reported that the Wellstone Memorial that actually took place on Monday and Tuesday was a celebration of Senator Wellstone's life? Don't forget to fill out the feedback section to this article!

The Wellstone Memorial - Watch it for Yourself
01-Nov-02
Paul Wellstone

The right-wing media has been screaming for days about the tone of Tuesday's memorial service for Paul Wellstone. The beautiful, loving service was over 3 hours long, but Republicans are outraged about the remarks of Paul's best friend, Rick Kahn. Rick's speech was the emotional climax of the service. Watch it for yourself - the ENTIRE speech - and call talk shows to denounce right-wing charges that Rick Kahn's speech was outrageous. Kahn simply urged the audience to carry on the crucial struggles for which Paul Wellstone gave his LIFE, and calmly but emotionally appealed to Wellstone's Republican supporters to put partisanship aside for one week. How dare the right wingers attack Wellstone's best friend? And for those demanding equal time - we demand equal time for every hour of Nixon's appalling memorial - and every hour of every day of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and every other Republican propaganda show!

How Dare They Tell Us How to Mourn?
31-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Monica Friedlander writes: "For more than a year they've been telling us what we're supposed to think, what we're supposed to feel, what we're allowed to believe in as Americans. And now, while we grieve the loss of one of our best, they have the chutzpah to dictate to us how we're allowed to mourn?! And to punish us for not doing even that by their rulebook, the holier-than-thou governor of Minnesota is going back on his word and will not appoint a Democrat in Wellstone's stead. That is a slap in the face of Paul Wellstone, his family, Minnesotans, and other good people nationwide still grieving. How dare he and the Republicans take advantage of our grief and berate us for how we choose to express our sorrow? No, we will not apologize for remembering Paul Wellstone by exhorting his ideals, crying out for justice, and reminding people of the cause for which this man gave his life. This is how Paul Wellstone's family chose to celebrate his life. How dare they stand in judgment?"

Republicans Whine Over Senator Wellstone's Memorial
31-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Doug Grow writes: "What an appropriate farewell for Paul Wellstone. The service to honor his memory Tuesday night ended with thousands of people screaming for him and thousands of others outraged. It was ever thus for the senator. What is a bit mystifying about the controversy spinning out of the event at Williams Arena is that anyone really is surprised. Let's see. There were more than 20,000 people on hand to honor a unique politician who wore his passion on his sleeve. Most of the 20,000 were true believers in Wellstone and his causes. The people who were closest to him -- Rick Kahn, a devoted campaign worker and friend, his two sons and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa -- delivered the eulogies. They pleaded with Wellstone supporters to keep up the senator's fights. This is shocking?"

Do Not Let Paul Wellstone's Death Go Unavenged by Action - and Questions
30-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

"The moment I heard the news that the unabashedly liberal, gloriously conscientious Senator from Minnesota Paul Wellstone was murdered, I could feel it in my bones, in my heart, and in my soul that he had been murdered. Maybe not by the CIA (Bush has managed to alienate even this group, whose best advice is routinely ignored or slighted), but at the very least by GOP operatives. A serious accusation? Damn right, and I mean it, in all seriousness. This is it, folks - war has been declared on America and the world by those among us who seek absolute power, by a fascist "junta" that lusts to plunge us and the world into eternal war designed to cement and perpetuate their control. If America allows Wellstone's murder to go unaddressed, uninvestigated by an unbiased task force in a search for facts open at every turn to the public, then our nation is doomed. Who then, will be next?" - Cheryl Seal

Mondale Starts with 47%-39% Lead over Coleman, And Independents Switch to Democrats
30-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Two days before Minnesota Democrats nominated Walter Mondale, Mondale "leads Republican Norm Coleman by 47 to 39% -- close to where the race stood two weeks ago when Wellstone led Coleman 47 to 41%... Although Mondale ended up attracting no more support than Wellstone did previously, there were indications of a reaction to Wellstone's death. For example, 31% of likely voters said Wellstone's death made them more likely to vote for the new DFL candidate, 10% said it made them less likely, and 48% said it made no difference. Also, possibly in reaction to the tragedy, the number of Minnesotans describing themselves as DFLers surged from 40% in recent polls to 51% Monday night. Self-described Republicans remained stable at 36% and independents dropped from 24 to 13%."

At Wellstone Memorial Service, the Democratic Party Reconnected with its Soul
30-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

BuzzFlash writes, "Something happened last night in a Minnesota auditorium filled with 20,000 mourners. Something extraordinary happened: the Democratic Party reconnected with its soul. The memorial 'service' for Paul Wellstone, his wife, daughter, and staffers turned grief into a celebration of the core ideals of the Democratic Party and a celebration of the American dream. If the Democratic Party has, in the past few years, been on artificial life support, last night, through the transfusion of Paul Wellstone's spirit, its heart began to beat again -- pumping robustly toward November 5th. Grief gave way to humor and personal memories before soldering into a steely resolve to fight for Paul Wellstone's ideals and principles."

Paul Wellstone's Funeral is a Rainbow of Diversity, Love and Hope
30-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

"They came wearing jackets with the names of Indian reservations on them. They came in VFW caps and they came in traditional costumes from Africa and Asia. They came in union jackets and they came in wheel chairs. They came leaning on canes or carrying children bundled against the cold. They came and filled the old basketball barn to the rafters, spilling over into the women's sports pavilion, spilling out on the street, hugging, crying, laughing and applauding. Who ever had a better funeral? Tuesday night's memorial for Paul and Sheila Wellstone and those who went down with them Friday was a combination funeral, campaign rally and old-time religious revival that kept the faithful in their seats for five hours but served its purpose by turning tears into a foot-stomping reaffirmation of the cause of their fallen leader." So writes Nick Coleman for the Pioneer Press.

Thousands Gather to Honor Paul Wellstone; Cheney Asked Not to Attend by Wellstone Family; Are the Excuses Provided by Ari and an Anonymous White House Weasel to be Believed?
29-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

"Wellstone's family had asked...Dick Cheney to stay away, so Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and the White House's chief congressional liaison were leading an administration delegation...Ari Fleischer said Cheney offered to attend the service...'The family was appreciative of the offer by the vice president to attend.' But he added that it would be inappropriate to characterize the private conversations that ultimately led to the decision that Cheney would not go...Another White House official said privately that...the Wellstone family told the White House they did not want mourners subjected to the kind of security screenings that Cheney's attendance would have required. This official also said White House advisers worried that the memorial service...would double as a Democrat get-out-the-vote rally and be awkward for Cheney." Sounds like cynical projection by corrupt Bushies. "There was never any thought of...Bush attending Wellstone's memorial, said the official."

Was Wellstone Murdered?
29-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

In a senate that is one heartbeat away from Republican control, Wellstone was more than just another Democrat. He was often the lone voice standing firm against the status-quo policies of both the Democrats and the Republicans. As such, he earned the special ire of the Bush administration and the Republican Party, who made Wellstone's defeat that party's number one priority this year.

This is the first chapter of the campaign book that Senator Wellstone and Bill Dauster wrote as Senator Wellstone considered a possible 2000 Presidential campaign. Senator Wellstone decided not to run for President in 1999, so the book went unpublished. The book was to be called, "A Better America."

Martyr For The People
29-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Activist writer and poet Natasha, age 11, pays tribute to Senator Paul Wellstone. Blessed with the boundless energy of youth, Natasha is unabashedly a Wellstonian activist: "100% - We need to give this our all and not stop halfway. It will take a lot of hard work and commitment. Our country is worth it. Democracy is worth it. All the issues we support are worth it. We can take back our country and make it everything it was meant to be. It won't happen on its own and our elected officials won't do it for us. We have to do it." Read her stirring tribute to Senator Wellstone!

Bush Does Not Attend Senator Wellstone's Funeral - Like Cheney, Was He Asked Not To? Ari Dissembles with Lame Excuse
29-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

MediaWhoresOnline.com reports that Mr. Bush will skip Senator Paul Wellstone's funeral. But instead of being straight up about it, Spinmeister Ari obfuscated that it would be improper as a matter of protocol: "Look at the historical record of when a sitting senator dies in office, no (Mr. Bush) will not go. When Senator John Chafee, Republican of Rhode Island, died in office in 1999, the President - not only had the decency to attend his funeral, he genuinely mourned. That president, of course, was Bill Clinton. A genuine leader who didn't care if the fallen senator was from the other party, but who cared a good deal about genuine decency and compassion. But that's just recently. As long ago as 1852, President Millard Fillmore attended special funeral ceremonies - for Senator Henry Clay. And in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson attended both the funeral services - and the burial... of Senator Robert Kennedy. There is no 'historical' reason for Bush not to go. Ari made this up."

Freedom Calling
28-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Marc Ash writes: "Paul Wellstone is dead. Why? As I write this there is not a single shred of physical evidence -- that the public is aware of -- to suggest foul play in his death. But I must say, this does not look right. I live within walking distance of the old Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. It's boarded up now. The yard is overgrown and desolate, inhabited only by stray cats. Most people passing by don't even know, don't remember, what happened there on that night in June 1968. I remember. I can't forget. Less than 5 years after the assassination of his brother, and barely two months after the assassination of Dr. King, Robert Kennedy stood at the pinnacle of his political career. The last image we have of him is that moment when he was standing at the podium saying, 'It's on to Chicago, and let's win there.' What he didn't realize is that he had already made two fatal errors; Number one, he said he wanted to change things, and Number two; he made them believe he could do it."

Paul Wellstone: Bright and Brave as a Hummingbird
27-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Laura Erickson, ornithologist and host of the public radio program FOR THE BIRDS, writes, "The tiniest bird on the planet, the hummingbird, is feisty and colorful and exuberant. This bird of superlatives also has the largest heart relative to its body size of any warm-blooded creature. Paul Wellstone, the tiniest man in the United States Senate, was its feistiest, most colorful and exuberant member. And the one with the warmest, biggest heart."

It's hard to be shocked by the hatred of the "Christian" right, but our Paul Wellstone Memorial (http://democrats.com/paul) has become a magnet for some of the most vicious attacks on a dead person that we've ever seen. Here are a few that we have removed from the Memorial.

Read Their Lips - The Bushes Mourn the Loss of Paul Wellstone - NOT!
26-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Writes Wayne Madsen: "Before we all get sucked into George W. Bush's eulogies of the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone let us not forget what his father, Bush 41, called the Senator at a White House reception for newly-elected members of Congress in 1991...when Wellstone met Bush in a typical White House pro forma reception line, he used the occasion to urge Bush on three different occasions to spend more time on issues like education and cautioning him against the Persian Gulf War...After Wellstone violated Bush 41's sanctimonious White House protocol, Bush was overheard saying, 'Who is this chicken shit?'... Far from being a chicken shit, Wellstone actually cared for people, unlike your pathetic son who could not even find a few minutes to attend one or two funerals of his Washington, DC area neighbors who were tragically shot and killed by a couple of snipers. No, Mr. Bush 41, Paul Wellstone was not a chicken shit, that epitaph is better reserved for you and your moronic son."

Senator Wellstone Was Charter Signatory on Sweeping Congressional Corporate Reform Initiative
26-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

On 10/24, Boston.com reported: "Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota today became the first Member of Congress to support a pledge to work for top to bottom reform of corporations and to provide new tools for federal regulators to protect taxpayers, consumers and investors...in the wake of the corporate fraud exposed at Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, Adelphi, Arthur Andersen and many other businesses. The pledge calls for (1) reining in excessive executive pay; (2) strengthening corporate governance; (3) repealing the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995; (4) banning corporate criminals from receiving government contracts; (5) strengthened reforms; (6) stopping corporate tax dodgers; (7) regulating derivatives; (8) ending conflicts of interest on Wall Street; (9) expanding disclosure; (10) tracking the extent and cost of corporate crime; (11) protecting financial consumers; and (12) fostering a national discussion and public inquiry on corporate power."

TwinCities.com Poll Shows that 69% of Minnesotans Believe Wellstone's Death was Caused by GOP Conspiracy
25-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Even as Minnesotans reel from the shock of Paul Wellstone's death, there is a growing suspcion and anger directed at the Republican Party. A poll taken hours after the tragedy shows that already, 69% of the Minnesotans and others across the nation who accessed the site through the St. Paul Pioneer online website say they believe a GOP conspiracy, not weather, terrorists, or other factors, are to blame for Wellstone's death. Suspicions were not allayed when Bush slipped in a statement and offered his condolences for "the loss of the senate." (a phrase cut from all footage aired on network news).

Mel Carnahan Died in Almost Identical Circumstances to Wellstone when Opposing Ashcroft in 2000
25-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

Paul Wellstone, the courageous Democratic senator from Minnesota, died on October 24 in circumstances that were nearly identical to the death of Democratic Senator Mel Carnahan in 2000. That year, Carnahan was up for reelection, he was ahead in the polls. It was October. Election night was just two weeks away. Then suddenly, Carnahan and members of his family are killed in a plane crash. The outcome, happily for Missouri but unhappily for America, was that John Ashcroft still lost the election to an upset victory by Carnahan's widow, but was then appointed US attorney general by Bush. Do you notice that this time, they made sure they got the wife, too? (Mrs. Wellstone was also killed).

Two Democratic Voices Speak Out: 'Was Paul Wellstone Murdered?'
25-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

"My heart feels ripped apart. Here was a man of courage and conscience. An American hero in the truest sense of the word. When so many of his colleagues in Congress cowered, afraid to uphold truth, Wellstone risked all to stand up and say "Enough!" And now, he is dead. Can anyone not totally brainwashed believe this is a coincidence - less than two weeks before a critical election, with Wellstone surging ahead in the polls. This was murder." - Cheryl Seal. "The bottom line is it would not surprise me to learn that the right-wing or CIA or someone close to Bush was involved in Sen. Wellstone's tragic crash...the truth is out there. " -Jackson Thoreau.

Paul Wellstone: We Will Carry On Your Fight!
25-Oct-02
Paul Wellstone

"Dear Paul Wellstone: In the wake of your tragic death, we gather here to honor your memory. As a Senator, you didn't just fight for the people of Minnesota. You fought for the people of America - and the entire world. You fought for health care for all... good jobs at good wages... civil liberties and civil rights... clean environment for our children... and peace. The most fitting way for us to honor you is to carry on the battles you fought with such determination. We will elect a Democratic Congress in November - and we will fight as hard as you did for the issues for which you ultimately gave your own life - and your family too." Sign the memorial.

Paul Wellstone Reinvents Grassroots Politics
04-Sep-02
Paul Wellstone

Harold Meyerson writes that the Wellstone campaign "is committing fully 30 percent of its resources to a ground campaign this year. For the past three decades, 'capital-intensive' campaigns have become the rule; candidates raise money and spend almost all of it on advertising and mail. [Organizing citizen] engagement has become a bit of a lost art in American politics. 'Relying on volunteers is back-to-the-future,' says Robert Richman, a onetime Wellstone student who is now a partner in Grassroots Solutions, a firm that helps campaigns mobilize those volunteers. [Wellstone's campus operation] is planning a get-out-the-vote operation that is designating one coordinator for every dorm floor at every major college in the state... the potential for swelling student turnout, and the Wellstone vote, is considerable."
