Elector Challenge

Democrats.com Activists Rally at Congressional District Offices
10-Jan-01
Elector Challenge

There were several demonstrations across the nation on January 5, 2001 to try and persuade Senators to challenge Florida's illegally-chosen electors. Locales included New York City (Charles Schumer), San Francisco (Barbara Boxer), Los Angeles (Barbara Boxer), and St. Paul, MN (Paul Wellstone). Democrats were not the only ones targeted as there were demonstrations in Harrisburg, PA to target Rick Santorum and Philadelphia to target Arlen Specter. There was also a demonstration in Des Moines, IA outside Congressman Greg Ganske's office. Here are some of the reports we received.

Black Caucus Sends a Message about Justice
09-Jan-01
Elector Challenge

"What does it say that even the most left-wing of white congressmen and senators have adjusted themselves to the problematic Bush election, while the Congressional Black Caucus has not? Blacks have had far more experience than whites of the gap between rules and truth, since the rules, first, of slavery, then of segregation, then of class have denied the truth that black Americans are equal to white." So says columnist James Carroll in the Boston Globe.

Elector Challenge

On behalf of the members of Democrats.com, we wish to express our profound gratitude and admiration for the Congressional Black Caucus and the individual Members of Congress who stood today before Congress, the American people, and the world to object to the certification of Florida's 25 stolen Electors. To show our appreciation to the "Florida Fourteen," we are sending cards, letters, and flowers to their offices and we invite our fellow Democrats to join in this effort by visiting our Web site at http://trustthepeople.com

Elector Challenge

If the vice president wanted the minimum of drama for this chore, not everyone felt the same. There were a dozen Democrats.com-ers shivering several yards in front of the Capitol, chanting "Jail to the thief!" for the new president.

It Was An Exhausting Two Days - But Worth Every Second!
06-Jan-01
Elector Challenge

I want to thank all of you for engaging me to write the legal brief supporting the objections to Florida's electors. Despite the difficult time constraints - two all-nighters - it was truly a labor of love. It was very important, for the Congressional Record and for future historians, to document that our case was not (or at least not just) political. It was first and foremost a question of unassailable law. My hope is that in future Presidential elections, our action today will serve as a precedent.

06-Jan-01
Elector Challenge

"Beyond the court-sanctioned injustices that we experienced in Florida, let's face it: Vice President Al Gore won this election," Hastings sais. "The American people are looking to us not only for public outrage, but also for leadership. In this case, leadership calls for courage."

The brief, entitled "Constitutional Law And Federal Procedure For Congressional Challenge Of Presidential Electors," was written by Mark H. Levine, counsel to Democrats.com. Levine recently gained fame on the Internet for his widely-circulated analysis of the Supreme Court's ruling entitled "The 'Gore Exception.'" Democrats.com is working closely with Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida and the Congressional Black Caucus to bring a formal challenge to Florida's Electors.

Congressional Democrats need a wake up call
04-Jan-01
Elector Challenge

"With only two days left before the Electoral College votes are officially accepted by a joint session of Congress, it is incumbent upon all freedom-loving Americans to get the Democrats in Congress and the Democratic National Committee to pull their heads out of the corporate controlled major media fog and do as the people whom they serve demand: Reject Florida's 25 stolen electoral votes." So says Bev Conover, editor of Online Journal, an outstanding progressive webzine.

An open letter to Congress from the co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp
01-Jan-01
Elector Challenge

I urge you in the strongest possible terms to challenge and reject the erroneous and illegitimate electoral votes from Florida. This will take immense courage, and will take our nation into some uncharted territory; but we are a strong nation, and we are capable of finding a solution that accurately reflects the wishes and consent of its people. But if we instead take the easy way out, we will have demonstrated to the world, to our children, and to history, that we are not worthy of the principles that we have always espoused, and we will have disgraced ourselves for all to see.
