13,000 Ballots Rushed From Voting Site in Volusia County; Must Be Recounted
Campaign 2004: Recount

"A glitch in a voting machine at an early polling place in Volusia County, Fla., is forcing election officials to recount about 13,000 ballots, according to Local 6 News. The ballots were removed from the City Island Library in Daytona Beach and transported to a secure vault in Deland after an optical scan machine failed. A computer error is to blame for the failure of the memory card which records the voting data, Local 6 News reported. The thousands of ballots will have to be resubmitted through voting machines Tuesday, according to Local 6 News."

Kerry Has Aggressive Plan to Avoid Gore's Recount Mistakes
Campaign 2004: Recount

"Gore prematurely conceded the 2000 race to George W. Bush, then had to retract his concession after aides said Florida wasn't lost. He never declared victory, an omission Kerry's advisers - many of whom worked for Gore - now believe created a sense of inevitability in voters' minds about Bush's presidency. Gore didn't plan for the legal showdown, though few could have predicted it before Election Day. And he watched as Bush seized political advantage during the 36-day recount by publicly discussing a transition to the White House. Not this time, promise Kerry's advisers. If there is doubt about the results, they will fight without delay. Six so-called 'SWAT teams' of lawyers and political operatives will be situated around the country with fueled-up jets awaiting Kerry's orders to speed to a battleground state." You GO, Kerry!

Petition for an Emergency Presidential Recount Commission
Campaign 2004: Recount

"If recent polls are accurate, America's 2004 Presidential race could be as close as it was in 2000. But in 2000, Americans of all political persuasions learned that our courts - including the U.S. Supreme Court - are too influenced by partisan politics to impartially resolve divisive election disputes. Yet as Election Day nears, both candidates are fielding armies of lawyers to wage legal warfare in those same courts. And dozens of lawsuits have already been filed over pre-election issues like voter registration, provisional ballots, and electronic voting machines. There must be a better way to resolve disputes over the election of the leader of the greatest Democracy in history. We, the People, call for the immediate creation of an Emergency Presidential Recount Commission (Commission) to resolve all disputes related to the election of the President of the United States in 2004 - IF the winner is in serious dispute when the polls close on Election Day."
